Just starting down the Sultan road myself. This is my little talkative roo Igor. Will be doing a mixed white silkie and sultan run. Hoping to get that sultan puff on some white silkie crosses And could use any and all info on these guys

You are going to love them.
It shouldn't take long to get the poof on silkies from the sultans. The issue I see is vulture hocks, I think silkies are not supposed to have them. But if it's for your own enjoyment, then ENJOY I personally love vulture hocks on all feather leg breeds but they are not supposed to be there haha.

I started outcrossing sultans to cochins, standard cochins. I wanted bigger sultans and colors. First generation has little poof and large combs, over 50%+ are culled (sold) due to not having 5 toes, beards and muffs. Bred back to sultans the ones that I called keepers, Produced nice chicks! Many while not showing a big vault like in avatar grow into huge poofs (and often 2 times the size of my standard sultan original stock). 3rd gen bred back to sultan are amazing, and I'm having a very hard time "culling" any. Next step I'm going to work on wing drop. I lost that in my crossing.

You shouldn't have to "cull" as heavily on your first generation because silkies have 5 toes and sometimes muffs and beards. You will have some work to get back to the silkie comb. I read a bit of the genetics on that, but have totally forgot it haha. Interesting project though.

I've tried all the feather foot breeds and nothing tickles my fancy like Sultans. I love them, really love them.

I’d love to hear from more experienced people, but when should I expect to know if my sultans are male or female? I love my sultans, I’ve had them for about a month and a week, but I'm always worried I’ll get a roo cause we live in a close neighborhood and they didn’t like our silkie roo that we had until he passed. I wanna keep my babies too.

Mine are two weeks ahead of you? Not sure, but I have only seen pink/red development in one of my chicks comb ("Lily"). The other's comb is just skin colored ("Ivory"). Maybe I got lucky with only one cockerel and a pullet.

I'll keep you updated, and you keep me updated. I would love to know what happens.

Anyhow here are some recent pictures of my chicks.

This is Lily, S/he's not show quality.

S/he's missing his/her extra toe on the left foot.


His/her comb has a bunch of spikes on it too.

As you can see it has some pink in it.



This is Ivory. From what I can see at this age she is show quality.

Nice rounded nostrils.

As you can see, no pink comb.
