Ducks LOVE water! We plan on putting our in an enclosure and getting a kiddie pool. I will warn you that ducks are sooooo messy....however, there are benefits. We just got 6 khaki Campbell ducks last week and I found out that they lay just as good as chickens..some up to 320 eggs a year????!!!! They are hardier than chickens and not as susceptible to diseases like chickens.

I'm really enjoying our ducks other than the big huge mess in their brooder....they're easier than my 4 day old chicks

I just got ducks in my order three days ago. 5 pekins and 3 khakis (I split the order with a friend) and yeah I had a ton of people "they are gross, they poop..." etc (Oh, I would like a bird that *doesn't* poop, instead). I agree that while they are messy in the brooder because they throw water everywhere and so all the poop is wet too, they seem to be easier upkeep than the chicks. I lined the brooder box with plastic and will bury a kiddie pool in the yard for an in-ground pool when they go outside.

I have 20 babies and am getting 4 more and every time we go to Tractor Supply I want to add to our flock but hubs says we already have too many! I say there is no such thing!

I must say chicks are very addicting, I sell what I can and give other people I like chicks just so I can hatch more. I have two large coops and 4 smaller ones. I keep two coops only for older chicks and the others ones for my grown chickens. I have coops for each breed. This is my retirement fund LOL

This is my first year with chicks. When hubby and I discussed it we decided on 4. Then we decided we wanted a duck, so we went with 3 chickens and a duck. We went to get the chickens and they had a minimum of 5, so we brought home 6 (because, after all, it NEEDS to be an even number...lol)

. We went to get the duckling and they had a minimum of 2, so we came home with 2. In the meantime we decided that we thought silkies were awfully cute, and I happen to know a lady who raises them. We wanted one, but she only sells them in pairs, so we are getting 2. She won't let us have them until they're 8 weeks old though So, in our case it's a REALLY good thing that our township has a limit of 10 fowl, as we obviously already have chick fever.

Hubby made sure I stuck to our limit of 8 when we went to the feed store for our first chicks. I could easily have gotten more! I drive by the feed store every day on the way home from work - EEK! I am afraid to stop in - too dangerous - lol!

If you got 8 to begin with, surely some of those are going to be cockerels (regardless of what the feed store said). So...... say two of those are cockerels. Then you need to get more pullets to replace them. You go to the feed store for "just two". Of course, after your first experience you realize that some of your chicks may be male. So you get more than two... just in case. BAM!!! Chicken Math!!

My husband is also complaining about the smell in our house., we have 14 Cornish., 6 barred rocks., 4 austolorps., 3 Rhode Island reds., and about 12 buff orpiningtons., that's a lot of chickens in one house., but the weather is just not co-operating to get them outside., so I try my best but air freshness are just not cutting it., so I completely understand...

We live nowhere NEAR a tractor supply and I'm sooo thankful for that! That could be dangerous. Although some people near me are talking about setting up a co-op for chicks and that could be scary for me too cause I want some more babies
