I am sat here a bit shell shocked really wondering how quick this all happend. But think I want to share it anyhow.
A while ago we got some eggs off Ebay - lol
They were supposed to be Silver grey dorkings. - Of course they were not! Anyhow only one of them hatched and so we got in contact with a friend who also had chicks and got a baby from him to keep our wee one company. - Our wee one had a difficult start and had to be helped from the egg. Everything was fine for a good bit but then one of the chicks got sick and suddenly died.
SO again we were left with only one. We nursed this little one and gave it loads of love.
Then when she was old enough to go out in the yard we searched for a few friends for her and found a local farm with some Maran chicks of the same age. So then there was three. Our beauty grew strong but not into a Dorking - she turned out to be an Amber star. So she got the name Amber. We gave them a ball to play with and when we took our pup into the yard she would love to watch us play ball and tried to copy.
When the three chicks were old enough we put them into the run with the other girls and sure enough soon there were eggs from them all. But Amber was obcessed with round things including eggs. - When Betty went Broody Amber was thrilled and Betty was her hero!!!!!! I frequently caught Amber hiding eggs but she never sat on them. If I tried to get the eggs she would charge me and peck my hand. I ended up having to hold her back with a stick! If I went into the pen to let the girls out in the mornings she would charge the back of my leg!!! Some times I got cross and lifted her upside down and caried her about till I was done with the other girls. Then I used to tease her and give her Love which she didn't like much despite all the hand rearing and cuddles she got when little.
We called her the Velocerapter. - Her feistines was a problem for us but she was great for protecting the other girls and would take on the cats that came by often. She would hollor and screech more than any other bird especially round egg laying time! You would think she was a rooster she was so loud!!!!!
This morning I made them scrambled eggs for a treat and when I put the plate down Amber ran as usual to grab the biggest bit and run off again - but this time she turned and I saw RED!!! - It showed bright against her pure white butt feathers. She had a massive prolapse hanging from her. - I remembered Elly and how she had a prolapse and the other girls attacked her and well it was just horrific.
I got a towel and grabed Amber and took her to DH. - HE was so upset. We knew that sometimes you can put it back inside and this looked pink and healthy so we did try but there was so much of it and it looked like it was ruptured already.
We reluctantly made the call - and DH took her away from me. He didn't have the strength in his hands he once had for doing this because he has been so ill. It is a real horrible job for anyone. He finished her off with the axe. I have some beautiful white feathers ( the only white girl I have ever had ) I keep feathers of them all when they die. DH came in for a cuppa and just sat staring at the wall. - We are devistated at the shock of having to do this after we cared for her so long.
We know it was the right thing to do by her - but we are really upset though I confess she is the only girl I have ever reached for in frustration and grabbed her neck and had to stop myself! - It is always the difficult ones you get so attached to.
The yard is so empty and quiet without the velociraptors white fethers flying at you! The girls know I think as they are very subdued indeed. At least she didn't suffer but I think DH is sufferring for having to despate his little friend!
