the Will They Hatch? thread

She is totally cute!! I want one! (ha)... [b[The thing that freaks me out about silkies is the "hair"...[/b]

So the weird toe thing this chick has going on is normal?

The "hair" is recessive; takes two copies of the gene to show as silkied. It will lay dormant and not show up in your flock unless you let the offspring cross or add another carrying the gene.

I have 4 out and 3 pips and one maybe starting to pip. Two of the eggs were iffy so they might not hatch, but still in there. My very first set eggs are in lock down due Monday.

It had been a day since the chick had pipped at the wrong end, it was making no progress, so I relunctantly helped my first chick hatch.
First I zipped it , sat it back in the carton, and waited...................................
Then I removed the membrane, sat it back in the carton, and waited......................................
I had never read that the membrane and embryonic sack are not the same thing, I realized I was looking at a shrink wrapped chick instead of a really wet one, so that came off, back in the carton, and I waited...............................................................

About 15 minutes later the little fellow woke up, sat up, then lunged out of the shell.

Chick #1 decides it's gone long enough without a meal................................ decides to chow down on chuck #3.

I seperated them, toe punched the cannibal for future referrence [plus teaching it what it was like to "get bit"] , and I think the helped chick might make it.

Yay, Steve! I'm so glad you got a 3rd chick despite having to unshell it. I had one (Shelley) from the NYD hatch that was pretty weak for a few days after I had to unshell her, but she made it and you can't tell she was "special needs" in the beginning.

Now I've got a question for you... who is my mommy??!! I just noticed that my "control" chick has half-hairy legs! What the heck?! Out of the "hairy legged" girls in my coop I have:
1. Dark Brahma who wasn't laying (and still hasn't resumed) due to molting
2. A banty and that was NOT a banty egg

So now which of my girls has a secret? I've hatched about 20 chicks from the rooster, he hasn't produced any hairy legged children except from the above 2 hairy legged mommas... so I don't think it's the rooster that caused this.

It's been a confusing type day full of chick-revelations.

I think the gene for feathered legs is incomplete dominate. If it is, either the Brahma kicked out one more egg, the banty laid a ginormous egg, or look for a little stubble on another's shanks. I'm not fond of feathered legs, so not real familiar with how it's inherited.

I am SO sorry I've been away! We got super busy here!!!

Steve>!! You had some hatch from that leaky busted up box?

I hope everyone thats hatching along has had good luck and progress with thier hatches!

My cabinet goes on lockdown tomorrow. Temps have held steady the whole time, so here's hoping!!!

I have a waiting game now.

Temps dropped for the first time in a long time. Turned up the temp and fell asleep. Woke up to 108!

I rarely see movement late on, but I did candle and I'm hoping I didn't broil my chicks.

I just leave mine, if the temp swings... it usually levels back out in a few hours. I adjusted twice, and ended up with worse spikes
