I am so worried! I have 17 BBS Orpington Eggs in my bator, yesterday was lockdown. Then this morning we had a power outage!!! I quickly grabbed 2 blankets and wrapped the incubator. Power was out for about 3 hours. Temperature went down to about 87 degrees!! Do you think any of them will make it through that temperature flucuation? I have such high hopes for these babies.

Back during Mahonri's New Year Hatch, I had an over 4 hr power outage right after the first egg pipped. All of my efforts to start the emergency generator failed, as did my attempts to turn the power converter from my van on. My neighbor called me by cell phone and said he finally had his genarator running, and to bring my bator down there. The bator had dropped to the 80s by then, even though it was wrapped in a blanket; but I decided to give them a chance. I said a prayer and took them outside in the teens and drove down and plugged them in.

When the bator came back up into the mid 90s, the pipped egg zipped, and finally hatched. Three more pipped before the power was restored; at which point my annoying landlord called to question me about why the well pump wasn't running now that the power was restored. [His fault, he left the faucet running, with the pump off, untill it drained all the pressure off the system, triggering the safety switch to shut off.] He wanted to make fresh coffee at 4 A.M., and was not satisfied with my offer to bring him some I had in my thermous in about a half hour.

I wrapped the bator with a chick, 3 pipped eggs, and 10 more doing nothing inside it, came home, plugged it in, and went to the well pit to fix the problem so he could have his freshly brewed coffee. To shorten this long story, all the eggs hatched but two; and I later decided I had pulled the plug towards the end of the 21st day, and those two may have made it if I had given them more time.

ETA: I did have four more in there, suspected clears, that were indeed clear and so not counted

Came home to good and bad news. One of the FBCMs I hatched from the eggs I won at the Stockton show died. It was the last to hatch over a 4 day period. I had take it out yesterday, because it was so much smaller and they had broken a toe on each of it's feet. Never seen that happen before, but they were right on any chicks I transfered into the brooder. Anyway it was a bout the size of a day old. Ate drank, but failed to thrive. Just glad I didn't have to do it myself. It walked fine with those toes, but was soooo tiny.

Then I checked the hatcher and there's a fat FBCM rolling around in there. I watched it wiggle over to the BM egg and check out the pip, so hopefully that one will be out soon. The only other one pipped is a Mottled Java. Never had one of those before. Now I'm waiting to see if those TJ egg and some Wellies and Barneys hatch. At least one for sure has made it through 108 and 96 degree spike and drop. I hear pullets make it better then cockerels through high temps, so if that's really the case maybe I won't have roo overload.

Congrats on the babies!

Well I can tell you one very cool thing, since you have barred rock hens any solid black chicks will be pullets and barred chicks will be cockerels. To tell right now look at the black chicks head, if there isn't a yellow spot on the top of it, it's a girl.

To know if you have Brahma babies check the legs, there will be fluff on the shanks. What color is she?

The yellow ones with stripes will likely look silver partridge when grown.

Tan w/darker head and back? Not sure. I'd think gold/buff but the roo would have to be split for gold... hmmm.

I think all of them will have cheek puffs, these are going to be some super cute fluffy butts!

try dealing with one that accidently stepped in a foot-trap (started out with a few around the chickens but now i trap a lil bit for pelts and coon meat). i've "culled" 5 of those stinkers and several possums aaround my coops since last summer, but nothing been getting my chicks any more!

Well my update for the morning is 6 fuzzy butts out!

Sadly I lost my first pip, it pipped through a vein and didn't make it.

I have 3 ginger, 2 silver and 1 black chicks. Black was second hatched but isn't good on it's feet. Poor thing hadn't fully absorbed it's yolk and as soon as it hatched it caught it on the wire floor of the Hover-Bator.

I thought I was going to lose it last night but it seems to be doing better this morning. I need to pull the others out so they stop running over it but I'm waiting on my two pips at the moment.

Guess it's time to go set up the brooder!
