The Wyandotte Thread

Howdy y'all! I'm not new to chickens, by any means, but this is my first round of Wyandottes. ( BY THE WAY! Is it dots or dotes as far as pronunciation? )

My mother in law got me 14 GLW about three weeks ago from a breeder in Alto. No telling the quality just yet. Lost one early on... I think he got smooshed the night the light broke. Lost one last week to cocci. The rest are off of antibiotics and looking great! Are males slower feathering? Three of the twelve I have left have a serious lack of lacing and the feather growth is half that of their sisters.

Overall, I think I see six or so I want to hold back to the breeding pens and get a few more for the gene pools in the next year or so.

Eventually I'm wanting exhibition stock in BLRW and SLW. My goldies are more for my entertainment.

I have the go ahead from my fiance to start showing again at the beginning of next year. Hopefully at least one of the birds in the grow put pens turns put show quality.

However, those are my hamburgs and that's for a separate thread. :p

Dots. Is it the cocci you are treating with antibiotics? If so switch to corid / amprolium. If you lost one to cocci the rest will need treatment .

This girl is out of a blue laced red hen and a blue laced splash roo. Any idea what color she is?

you mean a splash laced red roo?

blue laced splash isn't a color. it's either blue or splash. not both.

if it's a splash laced red roo, then she's a splash laced red. either way she's splash something. only time will tell tho if she's laced or red.

Not just GFF made that cross. I know Jerry Foley did it too.

@DMRippy & @Fancychooklady

So finally my bantam Choc on Choc eggs (thats what the claim is) have hatched, I set 9 shipped eggs and 4 made to lock-down and all 4 hatched today. Here are some pics. What do they look like? Any chance they are sexible based on what you see so far?

First-Born- "Penguin". He has this distinct dark mask

Penguin (to the right) is darker than the other 3. Is is because he/she is
10 hrs older than them and more fluffed or could it mean something?

Here is another view of Penguin (in the middle)

Quote: Do you have a way to tag him? It would be interesting to see if you hatched a QUAD. I hatch so many I have not watched them close enough. I had some Choc x Choc and Black OrpxWyandotte crosses up for sale and they didn't sell so I have like 20 eggs maybe I will watch them closer this time. I will tag the darker ones to see. My guess is with 2 doses of choc he would be darker.... kinda like barred birds the roos should have bigger head spots (not always I found out the hard way) Update us in a couple of weeks.

I will certainly tag him, although I keep chicken as pets only, name the chicks and can recognize them individually. I will post some pictures tomorrow when they are fluffed up completely. I have sent a PM to the seller as well for more details on parents. I will let you know when he responds.

The pen I have set up to make Blue Laced Silvers is starting lay pretty regularly now. I KNOW there are some Splash BLRW eggs in there too.... can't wait to see the BLUE BABIES in a few weeks! First batch to set next week.... YEAH!

Thank you!! I'm not too familiar with proper color names yet :)
