The Wyandotte Thread

thank you for the article! I found a wonderful lady with a big heart,and not enough chickens to take her. She has no rooster, so breeding will not be a concern. I told her trimming might be necessary as the beak grows, and she is happy to do that. I just fell in love with this chicken and did not want to cull her. I'm happy i found her a home.

I'm glad to hear that she is being given a chance , not all cross beak will become ' worse case scenario ' but it is good that you have warned her of the possibility so that she will know how to deal with it if need be. :)

Ok, I kind of got it now. Blue Laced Silvers is the end goal. So re-did the chicken calculator and its much faster if one goes with a Splash hen rather than a BLRW hen. But then since the first generation is hatched already, maybe I will give it a shot. Lets see! I will try to get some pictures of the chicks to see if any of them can be identifiable as

Phenotypes:
Pullets:
blue patterned redshouldered/cream laced
Ratio = 1/4 = 25%, minimum of animals to breed: 4
Pullets:
black patterned redshouldered/cream laced
Ratio = 1/4 = 25%, minimum of animals to breed: 4
Cockerels:
blue patterned yellow/golden laced
Ratio = 1/4 = 25%, minimum of animals to breed: 4
Cockerels:
black patterned yellow/golden laced
Ratio = 1/4 = 25%, minimum of animals to breed: 4

@DMRippy I am assuming I have to use the Blue Patterned Red Shouldered cream laced pullets to cross with the SLW rooster again. I know probably its going to be hard to identify the differences between the pullets, but at least one can eliminate all that may have yellow/gold in them as cockerels? Or does the cream lacing show up in week old chicks as well?
@DMRippy , I was playing with the chicken calculator and there were some interesting possibilities with the stuff you are working with. Have you tried getting any Blue Laced Gold from your stock because those are just a generation away. Or does that not fancy you?

Gotta thin down the flocks...anyone need adult SQ birds? PM me. Will be selling SL and blue.
Very tempting! However DH says I can't have anymore till next spring.

Quote: Mind you I have not seen many from this cross but the few I saw they didn't express much red. I can't take on another project so not going to work on another variety. I have too many projects, so many I am thinking of giving up on some to thin down for fall.

When you are ready to thin, let me know and I can drive over to pick up your beautiful birds

Quote: Looking forward to more pics! Maybe it'll still be a BLR but just with slightly different pattern. I noticed even speckled sussex look like that as chicks (same as welsummers). If the comb is the same as the others (rose comb) it's probably still a BLR or partridge wyandotte. It would be interesting if you post photos of it as it grows up, compared to the others. (fun to watch them grow up no matter the result - cute pics!)

@TinyBirds @Fancychooklady @DMRippy and everyone else who is still interested in the fate of these chicks, here are some pics from yesterday. The chicks with eyeliners have single combs so they are definitely different. Feel free to make your guesses, I won't get offended.

Here is another pic side by side with 2 others with pea-combs
Picture got rotated while inserting so dont know how to fix it. But the one sitting on edge of storage box
and the one closest to water are in question compared to the other 2 with dark heads and pea combs.

And here is one which is not in question, just hard to take pics of

I would just like to say I love this thread just about as much as I love Wyandotte chickens so much good info and beautiful pics it just helps remind me why I got into breeding Wyandotte chickens in the first place
