The Wyandotte Thread

Question to all: When did your Wyandotte puller start to lay?

My first pullet to lay was one of my SLW's - - it was last friday so she was just a couple days over 21 weeks - - my other SLW laid her first egg 3 days later - I have had an egg from each of them everyday so far - I was on vacation for 10 days and just got back last wednesday - I was so afraid I would miss the 'first egg' but lil Scramble waited for me!!!

Can't wait til the eggs get a bit bigger tho........they are tiny!

Well, I just finished reading the 114 pages of this thread, and I must say I am a HUGE Wyandotte fan! I love these chickens!!

So, I noticed this question has been asked before, but not answered... what is crossed to get/work on silver penciled? What about the partridge and the columbian?

Are there any books or resources you guys can point me to for learning about breeding, color genetics, showing, etc???

I plan to educate myself, sell my current flock, and then purchase show quality birds! We'll see how it goes!

sorry but these pics arn't the greatest.

Silver laced wyandotte Marcile. I thought this one had died but when I took the trash out the next morning it was on top of the trash heap chearping to be taken out of the trash can.

Rainierlass,
Pretty cute bunch you have there. I bet they loved free-ranging! Ours have been 'free-ranging' (read backyard-ranging) since about 4 wks old and they do love it.

Our bunch (including a SLW & GLW) are 16.5wks now. We're crossing our fingers for eggs soon. Heard the Wyandottes start to lay earlier than most breeds.

Question to all: When did your Wyandotte puller start to lay?

My SLWs started laying at 32 and 33 weeks.

Hello everybody! Tons of beautiful birds and pictures in this thread. Spent a good time skimming through most of those 114 pages(whew).

Last week I got 4 BLRWs. Yay! Could not believe how beautiful they are in person. These are my first wyandottes and also very new to lacing. So I am not able to "judge" those two chicks and would like comments on the potential quality of their lacing.. are they probable "culls" or keepers for breeding? What are the signs I need to look for? Is it a good sign or a bad sign they have this much barring? I see many chicks pictured in this thread of about same age & younger starting out with lacing and not barring which is worrying me slightly that these may not be pure for all the necessary lacing genes?

Here's pictures of chick #1

The lacing on my Splash BLRW pullet didn't look a heck of a lot different than yours - the first pic is of her around the same age.....

the next pic is of her @ 20 weeks.........

...hopefully one of the breeders can chime in and let you know what to expect.......I am farrrrrr from knowledgeable as far as chickens are concerned - I just know I love em!!!
