The Wyandotte Thread

That's what I was thinking about when I got my Buff and Golden-laced Wyandottes last spring. But the chicken calculator says the only way to get buff-laced from golden-laced is to cross buff-laced onto them. So where would you get the buff-laced color without losing too much of the Wyandotte breed character? The only buff-laced chickens I've found were game bantams (just looking through hatchery catalogs). It's a very pretty color, though.

I would use Gold laced wyandotte and Isa browns.

Hmm. That cross would probably have some hens that laid better than the Wyandottes, too. I might try that.

ETA: would the male half of the Brown Sex Links that Ideal carries work? I'm going to be making an order from them anyway, and could have them throw a couple of cockerels in the box. But the cockerels are white....I only have Golden-laced Wyandotte hens, no rooster. (Plan to get one or two, though.)

The gold laced hens and silver roosters would give all silver offspring with males leaking through with gold. You could do that or the other way around. Breed one of the first crosses back to a goldlaced then select from there. That is one way to do it, I know there is an easier way, I just have to dig through and find the easy way. The first generation of laced x pencilled will give some smutty offspring. If you breed all the offspring together you will get about 25% pencilled looking and about half double laced (like barnvelder or dark cornish). If you breed the double laced back to pencilled you will get partridge.

For buff laced, just use an isa brown/sexlink type, hens would be best but roosters could be used. The main thing is to get the dominant white into them. Gold laced would be easy to use. If you cross a IB roo to a GL hen you will get some gold and white birds. Breed those back to laced until you get what you want.

Thanks! I'll give that a try... will have to see if I can get some pictures of my Golden-laced hens so people can help me select the best two or three for the breeding experiment.

I have a SLW Roo and some GLW Pullets - If I breed them together will I get BLRW?

They are hatchery birds and I am not going to show them - just interested.

Also has anyone ever mixed a barred rock with a slw?

You would have to add blue in there someplace to get some blue lacing. Barred rock with a slw- Give barred birds I think. Maybe the flying monkey poop will show up let us know. He knows more about this stuff. Mike

Hi! I wanted to show you guys my Wyandotte Bantams. I have one White hen, Cottonball. I am hoping to show her in the Spring.

and one Rooster, George. He has some toe feathers that will disqualify him from being shown. Otherwise, what do you think of him?
