The Wyandotte Thread

My SLW's have been molting (terrible timing, as we've had subzero temps this month), and the first one that started losing feathers has been paler in the comb and wattles than the others for a couple of weeks. Have other people had their girls lose color in their combs when they're molting? She was subdued for a while, but now seems more energetic than the others, who have been losing a lot of feathers this week. Their combs are still red, but no one's been laying for the last 2 weeks. They really don't like the snow!

The sun is shining, the grass too green, and the hens are sunbathing all natural.

I was supposed to have a million but huge storms ravaged my nests and I got one... but I got one black splash Wynadotte baby who had a hard time hatching so I helped.... and now it thinks I'm mum! It's best friends with a silver swedish duckling and they both follow me around the house all day while I cook and clean and it's suuuuper cute. My fb has a video but until then, here's my one and only Wynadotte:

I have blue wyandottes, a couple that seem to be splash, and a couple of black roos.

Here are the 2 black boys fussing for the same sunny spot.

Gorgeous!! And oh how that excites me because I think the parents of mine were similar to yours. The lady said I'd get a blue/black mottle/splash depending and my little chook looks a little like your hens and roos!! SO PRETTY. I hope mine grows up to be that pretty!

She/he just might. The blues look lovely in the sunlight. I can see a bit of a lace pattern on the edge of some of their feathers where the feathers are outlined by the darker charcoal blue color. The black roos I noticed have a touch of the beetle sheen when the sun hits them.

This spring I am seriously considering ordering some chics from breeders to add different colors to my wyandotte flock for fun. I am however, going to work on getting my blues as close to standard as possible. The ones I have are from Privett Hatchery.

Show quality and productive can be really hard to find in the same bird.

I beleive that the Wyandottes that I saw at the German National last week look like they will lay a good amount of eggs. If anybody wants pictures of some of them just PM me. The wyandottes were the biggest classes at the show. Color was outstanding plus they looked productive.
