The Wyandotte Thread

Yes it is amazing that so many varieties were once admitted to the Standard in the ABA. I am working on the Dun and there are a few others that are doing so also. Maybe we can get a push with them again in the near future. Right now I am really trying to get the Silver Pencilled back going again to a viable breeding population and the same goes for the White Laced Red. If I can get them back to where I want them, then I might tackle another project of one of these breeds. I have to say Black Breasted Red is the most intriuging to me, and I have figured out a way to try and recreate them.

Thanks for working on the Silver Penciled! For me one of the most frustrating things is to watch people spend hundreds of hours and dollars on breeds that are not recognized while varieties that are already in the standard go extinct. I certainly don't really want to make it illegal to do what you want, but I hate to see the Silver Penciled, Partridge, Columbian, and Golden Laced fall by the wayside! I wish I could get just half the time spent (maybe wasted, at least in the end when that breeder dies and his variety goes with him) on "new" varieties to work on improvement of old, existing and struggling ones. Breeds like the Lamona, Holland, Campine, Lakenvelder, Sultan, etc. all gone by the wayside, or virtually so, that could have been saved by a person or two with a passion for different varieties over the course of time!

Re show quality GL Wyandottes, Columbians and SL, check out Pauls Poultry, in Dade City, Fla, just google Pauls Poultry, seem like good folks and their birds that I have seen are outstanding.

If you want the "best" in Large Fowl White Wyandottes you should try and purchase birds from Jonathan Patterson, he wins big and against the best competition...

You could also try Rick Hare in NY, he has very good Whites...

Both of these guys attend a lot of shows and exhibit their birds against top competition year in and year out.

Thanks for the good word Jerry! Rudy sent me the link to this website and now I'm hooked.

Can I use my LF Columbian wyandottes to improve the size and type in my Silver pencilled wyandottes ? I know I should know this but don't know what would happen to the pencilling.

Hey Jonathan its great to see you on here...I am going to brag on you a little here, Jonathan won Best of Breed in a huge class of Wyandottes at Shawnee, Ok in December and went on to beat the evil Rocks and win Champion American with a White Wyandotte...I am not sure you will get to go to all those shows once you get married...

In bantams they usually cross a SP male on a real good Partridge hen...all the pullets will be SP, you could try and get some pullets from rtroxel this fall. He has the best Partridge that I have seen...good color, size and type. I think he is planning on working on large fowl SP this year....

Rtroxel, I agree with you on so much of the "fervor" that surrounds these new exotic varieties when there are so many breeds that need the attention of good breeders. The first step I suppose is someone to work on them and to get them out to the public so they can see some of these rare breeds. I am partial to bantams but I do like the LF as well.
I am glad to see such in interest in SP Large Fowl and Bantams. To me they are one of the most gorgeous breeds out there when they are bred well. Currently I am just working on the SP bantams but I wouldnt mind working on LF in the future. I have raised them before. As a matter of fact the best Wyandotte I have ever raised was a SP Large fowl male. He was absolutely perfect in every sense. Comb, size, color and type he was exceptional. Sadly he went by the wayside along the way.
I am glad there are some dedicated breeders like yourself that have taken on the LF Partridge. To me they are the rarest of all of the LF varieties.
As for the Silver Pencilled, dont get me started talking about them haha. They are near and dear to my heart and I will talk about them all day if you give me the chance. As Turbo well knows...haha
