The Wyandotte Thread

Not to take away from thread, which I enjoy reading.

Commercial flocks look alike but their breeders keep lines of chickens that are not even closely related by genes altho to the naked eye, they do look alike. An old saying is that there is more diversity within a breed than between breeds. Altho if a disease is inherit in single combs and white feathers, then the commercial operations have a real serious problem.

Disease is why commercial poultry operations keep their houses segregated. I do agree that within a house, all the birds are genetically EXTREMELY very related and if a disease hits a house, it will destroy the house. It's just that the other operations are seperated and the diseased house is quickly isolated & probably destroyed.

Actually show birds & flea market birds have the highest exposure risk. The cleanest bird is only as clean as the dirtiest bird there.

I'd prefer if anyone has any questions to please PM me or let's start another thread so as not to hi-jack this one. It has been enjoyable to see the pixs and read the dialog. I'm now sorry for adding that to my last post. From other threads, I'm little sensative to attacks on commercial ag. & no I don't have one nor do I want to work or have one. Been there, done that.

I have no interest in attacking you or commercial ag or anyone else. I raise chickens because I like them. You do, too. You don't have to be sorry for anything and these threads have minds of their own on all accounts. Just say what you think you should and if we all get offended, that's just as much our fault as yours

Wyandottes Rule!!!

Ok my first post i have a pretty SLW rooster and 4 hens that will lay 2 RIR with some black markings on them 1 i believe a black s-link and 1speckled sussx the non layer is a brown leghorn but she stayed small i thought she would be bigger. my question is what will i get out of the SLW and the speckled sussx color/markings any help is appreciated

Do you mean what will you get if you cross the two? Good question. I think you might get some type of barring, maybe a transvervse bar. But you might some intermediate lacing or some mottling. There is only one way to find out....

I've noticed many breeders on these threads putting copyright across their photos or some way of marking your photos. I can see why. I was googling some images of various breeds and came across some interesting things. I will definately stick my foot in my mouth if I am wrong and I deeply apologize if I am, but Cackle hatchery has some pics of White Wyandottes and Salmon Faverolles on their site that I strongly doubt are from their stock. Any thoughts or past experiences?

Most hatcheries do put images of show quality birds on their sites, and the chances of getting such are about 1 in a Million. Watermarks are usually for prevention of image thievery from Craigslist posters, eBay sellers, profit breeders, etc. People who apparently have too poor quality of birds to show their own, and want to rip their customers off with showing images of someone else's stock who's worked hard on getting the quality they have.

Heck they are probably pictures of your birds, I used to just post pictures of my birds...but I have found pictures of my birds on other breeders websites, so we do put a watermark with our name on the pics. It may be more a case of the webmaster just being lazy and finding the pictures of the birds they need online and using them.....dont know.

I'm pretty sure those two breeds ARE my birds! That's why I got kind of upset. They gave credit to other breeders for some of the pics they had posted but the ones for, ironically, my two main breeds are not labeled as anyone's stock. Oh well, I guess I shouldn't complain if they are promoting the breed. I'd just like a little credit.
