The Wyandotte Thread

They say a Wyandotte is a "bird of curves." A good Wyandotte is wide, deep, carries its tail well, nice yellow legs, rounded and full comb, and basically looks curved and smooth all around.

Well, Barred is fairly uncommon in Wyandottes. I would try mating to the blacks and the white. I think you'll be more successful with the blacks, but idk. Eventually, after a couple more generations, you should get mostly Barred babies. Just keep picking the barred when you have them. I certainly don't think it's normal not to get all barred chicks. That indicates some recent crossing.

It is common for the white wyandotte bantam to carry Barred and mask it, it often appears when breed to the black or blue. Most White wyandottes are dominant white with no pattern genes, while the blacks and blues carry different pattern genes and mask them with other genes to extend teh black areas.
in order to maintain barred pattern you will want to mate the barred male over a black hen, This should result in all barred offspring that will be dark, you will need to select from there. Be very carefull as most Blacks have poor leg color which is why it is comon to use white to lighten the underdown in the black and get back to yellow legs. You will find maintaining the barred with good leg color is not that difficult as the underdown is lighter. For Blacks you would want to focus on a grey underdown and black feather this will help you get back to a good yellow leg.
Hope that helps.

Thank you!

What do you mean when talking about frosting? a fringe of white on the black lacing? Forgive me, i'm not new to chickens but new to laced wyandottes

I just wanted to give a word of thanks to the Foleys. I got some BLRWs and blue wyandotte chicks from them a week and a half ago. The chicks are beautiful and doing great! The service was terrific. Thank you!

I also got some white wyandottes from Jonathan earlier this spring. They are beautiful birds, also. Working with him was a pleasure, too.

I have been following this thread for months now, and I am thankful for all I've learned from everyone here and for the great start I've got on my wyandotte project.
