I'm sorry but he doesn't have the wyandotte shape. Wyandottes are birds of curves. His back is too long. His tail from the back should be the shape of an inverted V (teepee shaped). He'll be pretty backyard eye candy, though.

Thanks, thats what i wanted to know! Ive not quite figured out why people breed undesirable treats.. I guess cause most think there just chickens but if your breeding why not breed for quality in a specific breed... Im newer to all of this breeding stuff but I know I dont want to start off with characteristics that dont fit the breed... Thanks bunches!

They could be breeding for other things, like trying to improve egg production (which seems to be how the production RIRs came to be), or trying to get a better duel purpose bird, etc. We wouldn't have so many breeds if people didn't experiment with them and try to select for different features than the standard. Although, I agree at some level...I would love to see more heritage RIRs here in Rhode Island since I live in the town where they were first produced and I don't see any here any more. All production reds. Anyhow...I love my wyandotte but she/he is a hatchery bird so I am sure it won't fit the standards. You still have a very pretty rooster

HSCMorgans - btw, out of curiosity do you have a picture of your roo around 6 weeks old? Haha, I am still trying to tell myself that mine could be a girl....when I am pretty sure that it is not

Hello, Everyone! I have 2 questions that I hope you can answer:

1) The breeder I bought chicks from had her BLR Wyandottes advertised the following way:
"BLUE LACED RED WYANDOTTES: These birds are very beautiful with their blue/red laced feathers. I have several bloodlines including Foley, Paul, and Valentine. They are excellent layers of light brown eggs."
Two of the 4 BLRW I bought from her are blue and two are more black laced...do I call the dark ones blue laced red still or are they black laced? It seems silly when I type it out, but I'm curious if they are genotypically (or just phenotypically) the same as a GLW or black laced red or something else.

Here is one dark one (too bad it has a single comb and is probably a roo since I can't keep roos here) I love the green iridescence:

2) Hen or roo? This is the second dark laced bird. It's 2 months old and seems dominant in the flock of 15 hatchmates, but likes to snuggle on my lap if I sit and watch them. 2 of the other BLRW also have combs and waddles, but have small, more upright fluffs for tails and were slow to feather so I'm assuming their longer roo tail feathers will come in sometime soon. This one pictured has a hen-like tail (from the little I know about it! LOL) so I'm curious if it could be a hen after all.

ETA: this bird is also in my avatar showing it's blueish underfluff (technical term?) and posing with one of the lighter chicks that I think is a hen

Here is one of the other BLRWs (2 months old). I assume roo with the comb, waddles, and fluffy, high tail...yes? I love the lacing...too bad I can't keep it if it's a roo!

BTW, I would enjoy feedback on type and color for education purposes. I'm not in a position (the middle of Dallas) to breed, but I love studying genetics and may breed in the future. These were sold to me by a breeder a few hours outside of Dallas as pure BLRWs (see my post above).

Thanks!
