The Wyandotte Thread

Hi Wyandotte folks

I posted a Gender question a couple of days ago and did not get a reply. It was probably my own fault because the picture was not close enough. I went back and cropped the picture and am adding a new picture from last Sunday.

Any Gender Guesses? The GLW will be 7 weeks old tomorrow.

Thanks,

ronott1 - I can't tell how red the comb is but if you have other wyandottes and this ones comb is much redder than theirs I say it's a roo. I am no expert though, but my GLW roo had a noticably redder comb than any of the hens (they are all non wyandotte hens though) at as early as 3 weeks old, and defined, red wattles. I can see the wattles already on yours too which is why I am leaning towards boy. If they are not red at all then I'm not sure, I can't really tell from the pictures.

Thank You!

I will get a close up tomorrow.

The poor thing was the only one to hatch so I have no hatch mates to compare it too.

I know in the pictures I took of mine the comb and wattles never looked as red as they seemed in person. If they are red at all already it's probably a boy. I have pictures of mine at 3 weeks if you go to my profile but none of them are very good because he doesn't like to sit still. Now, at 13 weeks old he is the only one of my chickens I absolutely cannot catch. Ever. He's way to quick for me!

Hoping that they are NOT as big of a project as Marans or Amerauacanas or Blue Rocks.....  :fl   That was the main reason I am going to him, to cut down on the need for work.  I need to read my Wyandotte SOP so I know really what to look for in the SLW Roo.

I hear ya! I would have felt better about my BCM's had they been better foundation birds. Just can't see where to go with them when all you have to work with already have DQ's. I feel really good about my SLW's. Hope they don't blow up on me.

Ron, with that comb and at only 7 weeks, I'd guess cockerel. Can you get a side view? They don't always develop the cockerel feathering pattern that early, but soon you should start to see changes on the wing feathers.

Thank you Jules!

I will get a couple of close up pictures tonight.

Looks like a pullet to me.... is there lacing on her back... it looks like it. If there is lacing on her back and wings it is a pullet. I don't see a roo comb at all.
