Not sure I am going to fall for that... my BLRW roo has 4 hens and has no problem keeping those eggs fertile. Maybe it just related to the SLW cuz I just don't see it being the comb.

I have thought about swapping roos. I have a younger roo I could put her with and put him with my pullets. Right now I just want some fertile eggs.

Actually, there have been several well documented studies (about 10 or so since 1940) on Rose combs and fertility issues. From what I remember skimming some of the articles, the gist of it is largely that rose comb males are less successful than single comb males (or even heterozygous rose comb males) at fertilizing eggs but it is generally more of an issue when there are too many hens per rooster (and for homozygous rose comb males that number is smaller than for single comb males). I wouldn't imagine that in a pen with one rooster and one hen the fertility issues associated with rose combs should be an issue.

There are more if you care to do a search, these are just a few that popped up when I googled "rose comb fertility problems."

Swapping cockerels helped my flock a little. You know the fertility problems I've had. The first boy gave me 40% fertility. The second one brought it up to 70%. And that was HERE. Once the eggs were shipped, the fertility went down to 5-10%.

I hope trimming or plucking works for you. I'm willing to try anything... except maybe the AI.

She must be thinking of the theory of the Semen of rose and single combs. It is said that Single combed rooster's sperm lasts 7-10 in a hen. but a rose combed rooster lasts 3-5.
Thats why most breeders use smaller groupings of hens to make sure the roo can get to all of them.

Donna, Have you tried seperating them and then putting them back together? I sometimes seperate the rooster for a while and when I put him back he goes nuts. LOL

Long time no see! How are you? You let me know if you need some eggs, when I get my fertility fixed some.

I may do that pretty soon. I have so many birds getting moved around and sorting keepers and the ones for sale. Going to be busy for few more days. I just set some of her eggs yesterday so we will see. But I still have not seen him mount her.
