The Wyandotte Thread

Actually got them from a local NC farmer, he has been raising these chickens since his father farmed. But I think he was more interested in eggs then show quality.

So ... then would you say these do NOT look like SLW's? or if they are SLW's they don't look normal for 4.5 weeks old? ... I was thinking that the blacks might be pullets and the whiter ones might be roos (but I know every one mentions you can't tell gender by sex).

I would bet his dad probably got his original birds from a hatchery. They look like hatchery quality birds.....they will probably lay you lots of good eggs, but I doubt they'll look much like they're supposed to. Some of their lacing will probably improve somewhat, but I don't think it will probably be what you were hoping for.

These are a couple of pictures of mine at about 6 weeks...not too much older than yours. Some where in my many picture folders I've got pictures of some of mine at a month old, but I can't find them....I probably didn't put them in the SLW folder

The 1 cockerel I kept (got lucky on this one, I guessed their sexes when they were about 2 weeks old)

Since we're posting BABY pictures, I may as well jump in!
These are my very first BLRW. I hatched them from eggs that I bought from 3 different breeders. Unfortunately, there were over 30 eggs and only six hatched. I'm not sure which breeder any of the six chicks I got came from.

These are my six 4 1/2 week old chicks:

Their lacing is really beginning to develop and I absolutely LOVE them! I've got 25 day old chicks coming in 2 weeks and will be hatching a dozen eggs from Foley's soon and then I'll have my foundation flock for these amazing creatures.

Let the fun begin...

OK, here we go - heavy on the pix, too! These guys are 3 weeks old in these pictures. I'm waffling on the roo vs. hen issues, even though I know it may be quite early to tell. But I'm new at this, so I'm gonna post some pix with my thoughts, and hopefully all of ya'll in the know about GLW will weigh in. I've numbered them for ease in replying (see, I clearly expect input, lol). Thanks in advance!

1. I'm assuming this is a hen due to the heavier feathering.

2. Assuming hen because of heavier feathering, yellow comb and essentially no wattles.

3. Here's where I start getting confused (well, I don't START here - it just continues on...). Yellow comb, no wattles, so I'm thinking hen - but very little feathering. Certainly not as much as its clutchmates (or whatever they're called).

4. OK - I'm sorta thinking hen, but then again, it's got pinkish wattles. Hrrmmph.

5. Is this a hen? Yellow comb, but light on the feathers.

6. Here's a good one for comparison. I'm thinking roo on the bottom (less feathering, pinkish comb) and hen at the top (more feathering, yellowish comb).

7. Another one for comparison. Roo on left (less feathering, pink comb), hen on right (more feathering, no pink comb).

8. What gives with this, though? Lots of feathering, lots of hen-like tail feathers - but pink comb and wattles. I'm thinking hen, but once again, confusion rules the roost.

9. And just for fun: "Talk to the foot!"

10. And let's not forget the infamous chicken dance...

OK, I'll leave you all alone now. At least for a little while.

Thanks, KDH! I'm loving the pictures at different ages. It helps me to figure out what I might be looking for in a few weeks! I have absolutely no clue at this point (10 days).
