At what age do you butcher your boys? I've yet to be able to convince my husband to put them in the freezer but we can seem to sell them anymore and like the rest of you we are getting over run with them.

The following breeds come in rose combed varieties, though some also accept singles too.I have not read all those studies but i do think it might've really specific lines they are using. I have never heard of fertility problems in RC RIR or Domiquers. or even in BLRW......I can't think of any other rose comb breeds.
Quote: guess I got lucky with my red cochins this time around... last hatch last fall was 4 roos, only one matured out very nicely. this go-round, I've got 6 pullets and 1 cockerel from the same hatch. all seem to be growing nicely. with my blrw, i'm sure there were pullets too, since I sold all 14 chicks hatched but 1. but I only know of 4 and they're all roos. LOL
my dorkings seem to gravitate to pullets. I can't grow out a good cockerel to save my life! all the colored I got from sandhill that lived (lost a bunch from shipping) are pullets. thought I had a cockerel, but turned out to be a pullet too. so guess I breed with reds and try to 'make' my own colored boys.
so once I set up my blrw, i'll see what I can get out of them. and since I couldn't bring myself to eat any potentially purebred bantam blrw eggs, they got set yesterday. they've been together a week now, so we'll see if any are pure yet.
I butcher some out at 10 weeks. I like the little birds sometimes. The rest are butchered out when they start getting hormonal or food consumption is more than value. At what age do you butcher your boys? really? i would never of thought a RIR in a million of years. The body conformation is so opposite of a W.I don't think BLRW have very many problems with fertility because they are a newer color that has been crossed with other breeds. I know Foley used a rhode island red long, long ago to get the rich mahogany color and used 1 or 2 other breeds which, to my knowledge, have very little fertility problems. I think that is why the BLRW are doing great with breeding and fertility. The silvers I think are like others said containing lines that have low fertility. I feel like the fertility could be corrected over time as long as breeders are aware and keep track of it. I wish I knew why it was mainly a SLW problem. I haven't had any issues with my partridge. Granted I have only had them about a year so we will see next year when the rooster is older...
Silvers really have a fertility issue? I ordered a dozen of them from Dick and I have two left. They seem to have a hard time surviving too. I lost 6 of them the first week. It was quite a surprise at the single combs too. I love the two I have left. They are so beautiful. I really wish I had more. I am going to be looking for more for sure.I don't think BLRW have very many problems with fertility because they are a newer color that has been crossed with other breeds. the single comb carriers may not have a fertility issue. I the fertility issue is with thew birds that carry 2 copies of the rose comb gene. I would be happy to have a fertile roo even if I got single combs.. I got some single combs in some Ameraucanas I ordered. that was disappointing.Silvers really have a fertility issue? I sure is hard to get photos at this age. They never stand still.
