Wyandotte Washing Question
Hi all, I'm taking my Wyandotte bantam to county fair. Coop in is on Monday, and I was wondering if I should wash him today, tomorrow, or Sunday. I want him to have plenty of time to dry but I also don't want him to get dirty again if I wash him too soon. For those of you who have more experience with washing Wyandottes, how many days before the show do you wash them so they stay in nice condition?

SOMEBODY HELP ME OUT HERE: Okay so I went to the state fair today to try to get an idea of what the judges are looking for in the birds. I walk in there and I am shocked! Every bird is HUGE compared to mine, and I mean like 15/20lb birds. What the heck???

My birds are like 12lbs for roos, 8-9lbs. for the hens...And ppl have told me that these are big. So now I'm so very confused. My standard I thought my size was perfect, but these birds were on steroids. I have never in my life seen them so tall and bulky.

What are they feeding them? How do they get them so big? Are they suppose to be this big?

Even the Blue Wyandottes there were like twice the size of mine by at least 1/2 a chicken size. Do I need to be buying what the ppl I talked to there as "Exhibition" size birds to even compete?

Suggestions thanks,

If you have exhibition Wyandottes can you PM me Thanks

OMG, that is exactly what I thought when I went to the MO State Fair yesterday.

WHAT... THE... HECK!!!

That's what I thought TOO!! I was in large breeding stock and hens and the hens weren't that bad but yeesh, the other breeding boys were at least TWICE the size of my poor Chap!

I hear ya! I show my birds and they are good sized but I went to the Ohio nationals and one other show and I swear their birds were on steroids! I was almost embarrassed at how small mine looked even though I know they are the proper size. Even my Orpington hen who is well over 8lbs more like 10lbs looked like a baby compared to the 15-20 lb hens at that show.

I have a run with sand I put my exhibition birds in or a cage after the first bath. I do not let them back on the ground. I give them at least 3 baths. The first one a month before. I trim beaks, nails, and look the bird over pretty good. They need a month to soften nails and beaks if i have to trim or file.I do the bath again at two weeks, and two days before. I use a hand held reading lens to do a fine look over two days before. I leave that extra day in case I find something I need a full day to fix. Like hidden feathers between toes. I use a soft nail brush to scrub legs, feet, nails, combs and wattles on the two day bath also. I cover exposed skin in coconut oil. Some use vet RX instead. Don't forget your piece of silk. Double and triple check for lice and mites at every bath.

I think the question remains... can you compete with those birds... should you be forced to compete with those. As far as I know, bantams were bred down for their diminutive size... and they are judged in another class from Large Fowl.

And at some point, shouldn't they be considered outside of the top end of the breed standard? I mean... for God's sake... they're practically turkeys at 20 pounds... Maybe a Goliath class would be suitable for the enormous sized birds, so that they do not compete with more normal sized large fowl...
