The Wyandotte Thread

Theyre definitely not as slow feathering as he was but im hoping for some beefier birds, my hens are a fair amount smaller than he is. The couple pullets i have that are older look pretty good so far, i love how wide and 'poofy' they look!

I am looking for a black Wyandotte LF, must be good quality. I realize people won't sell their best birds, but I will take 2nd best if it had good type. Good type is a must.
Thanks. Shipinng is ok. I'm in NY.

Any thoughts or advice on this guys coloring and type? I'm thinking he looks pretty good. :) he's the one my son chose to show for 4-H but I'd like to know what all you experts think! :)

What would you say about this comb?

Be as mean as you want. It's for my education.
I agree with what everyone has said. The leader should be conforming with the head and the comb a bit smaller since she is a female. Honestly not that bad a of a comb. You should see my partridge wyandotte males comb!

Can't wait to see some better pictures Delisha. From what I can make out they are a great bunch of birds!

His type is coming in. He will be filling in a bit more then you will get a better idea of what he will look like as an adult. His lacing and blue coloration are very nice. The only gripe I have is the gold in his saddle. It should be nice and dark like his wing and breast. Over all I think he is nice. Just be aware of the color. Once you lose that mahogany it is very difficult to get back.

Since there is no standard for this variety it's hard to comment on colour. Assuming the eventual standard is the same as Blue Laced Red in other breeds [not always the case] his breast colour looks good but everywhere else the colour is off.
As to type he's not even close. If you have a Standard look at the illustrations of Wyandotte males. If you don't have a Standard you need one. In fact, if anyone is interested in breeding/showing, the first thing they should buy is a Standard-before they buy a chicken. In the long run the Standard will more than pay for itself by keeping you from buying birds you shouldn't have bought.
However, in 4H, as long as he's clean & in good feather he'll do ok in most settings. I don't know what the 4H show is like where you are. Some are quite competitive, some are not. I judge several Fairs/4H shows every summer & a couple of the ones I judge regularly are actually pretty good shows while most are "just chickens".

Color question we have silver laced bantams and I acquired three blue laced red pullets with the intent of buying a rooster which I have had no success in finding so my question is can I breed them with my silver laced and what will the outcome be, or my second question is anyone have a BLR rooster they would part with

are you looking for lf or bantam?

Silver Laced male over Blue Laced Red hens will only get you half Silver Laced and half Violet laced pullets. All males will be Brassy Silvers, (Silver laced and Violet Laced), but if you still can't find a male a Brassy Silver over Blue Laced Red will give you 50/50 Silver and gold. Male Silvers will still be Brassy. Violet Laced pullets back to pure Silver Laced Male will give you 50/50 SL and VL..
