The Wyandotte Thread

Yes, they should have yellow legs but not all do. There is also varying shades of yellow. No big deal unless you were going to start breeding for show....she's still beautiful!
I believe the standard for blue and black allows for dusky legs so long as the bottoms of their feet are bright yellow. but all other things being equal, in a show yellow legs will get more attention. but she's still very nice, and IMO I would show if I were inclined.

but since I have only 1 show that's easily within driving distance, it's the only one I'll be showing at. IF chicken dinner's done feathering in by then and his momma's done moulting. (tho she's splash laced, not blue laced.)

also planning on taking a pair of silver grey dorkings and a couple of my mottled and silver laced bantam cochins. maybe a red dorking girl or 2. again, IF they're done moulting by then...

if I don't make the November show, I may make the longer trip to Knoxville. tho if I make champion row (doubtful for my first show?) I'll have to stay overnight, but the show steward has told me that if I don't he'll help me coop out early because of my drive time (5 hours +).

Quote: I think I see yellow between her toes..if her bottom are yellow and her skin is yellow she will be good to go..and yes they are to have yellow legs....lovely wattles and comb. Like her hard tail feathers too..by her color in her comb..she will start to lay for you in 6 weeks or shorter...some might say she is too fluffy and cochin looking. I like the look personally. How i her lower chest?

Here is a photo of Ruby, my Blue Wyandotte. I bought her from a breeder in July, and according to what I was told, she is now about 36 weeks old. Question: Aren't Wyandottes supposed to have yellow legs? Do her dark legs suggest she might be a mix? Still have not gotten any eggs out of her either...

She should show well if she has yellow feet. I would like to see better lacing.

they have a similar problems with leg color in some rocks. dusky would be like a yellow leg with just a slight wash of color down the leg. that leg would probably be a DQ for most judges. we have gone over that several times with judges for blue rocks. they seem to have a hard time with dark legs in blues for some reason. lucky me I have 2 roos with NICE yellow legs to work with and my GSBR SEEM to throw good leg color when making solid colors.

been doing the happy dance for a few days....my SLW X CHOC are FINALLY FERTILE and they are giving me 2 eggs a day. yeah!

I will post pics when they hatch......keeping only the choc pullets with lacing. that ain't going to be many is it??????? maybe just the choc pullets......

Thanks, Delisha. She does have yellow between her toes and on the bottoms of her feet. She IS definitely fluffy and cochin-looking. I too, like that look. I will try to take some more decent photos of her showing her chest and tail better. I appreciate your input on her comb in regards to laying. Her future eggs are much anticipated :)

Too fun, post pics!

Yes, I breed Columbian Wyandotte and have three projects too. The projects are Blue Columbian, Birchen and Blue Birchen.

Wonderful! If remember correctly one that you started with with was the size of a Royal palm turkey, wasn't it? If it's the one from Carl J it was huge :-O I remember him.

I bought my rooster as a month old cockerel along with a pullet the same age from Carl. They followed a beginners trio where two died before six months leaving me with one pullet. Then when Carl decided to focus on his bantam breeds, I got his reserved breeders. He liked my rooster better than his so Beau and the seven girls began the journey.
When I bought some hatchery layers from Ideal for the egg flock there was a standout Blue pullet. Under Beau, she produced Blue, Black, Birchen and Blue Columbian.
