I would say it is awesome! That is a quality that should be bred for imo. If I had a group laying at that age I would use them for breeding.

They're not purebred, but considering I have them for eggs and fun that's not problem for me. They had 3 daughters with a younger wyandotte rooster, also very very good layers and a much higher percentage of wyandotte blood. But they are obsessed with sitting on those darn eggs for 3 months every year. I think thanks to the wyandotte dad.

Hey everyone, I need some help with my 2 Colombian Wyandotte's. We got them as fertilized eggs from a local farmer in the spring and our wonderful Silkie hatched them at the end of May 2012. We kept the 2 hens that hatched, gave the 2 roosters to a friend with a hobby farm.
The chickens are big, beautiful and healthy, but they have not started to lay eggs. They are now 7 months old!!
We also have 3 Ameracaunas that lay every other day and are healthy.
What's with the 2 free loaders?!

Hey everyone, I need some help with my 2 Colombian Wyandotte's. We got them as fertilized eggs from a local farmer in the spring and our wonderful Silkie hatched them at the end of May 2012. We kept the 2 hens that hatched, gave the 2 roosters to a friend with a hobby farm.
The chickens are big, beautiful and healthy, but they have not started to lay eggs. They are now 7 months old!!
We also have 3 Ameracaunas that lay every other day and are healthy.
What's with the 2 free loaders?!

We have two Columbian Wyandottes hatched mid May. One started laying Jan. 30th, and has steadily laid an egg every other day since. The other, who is probably 2 weeks younger than her, hasn't started yet. I figure she'll start when she feels like it.

BTW, the one who isn't laying is steadily moving into the alpha hen role in our little flock, unseating a 20 month old.

It's just the number of daylight hours... End of May is a late hatch... and they're cutting it close to being able to mature to POL before the days get too short to induce laying.

I have 7 hens, a leghorn, a pair of Silver Laced Wyandottes, and four Easter Easter Eggers (sold as Ameraucanas). Hatched May 24. Most of them started laying before the end of November... but I still have two who haven't started laying. An EE and one of my SLWs.

My leghorn of course started in the middle of October... the other four who are laying all started between Nov 6th and Nov 22... The last hen to start laying, an EE, started November 22nd... there was about 9 hours and 45 minutes between sunrise and sunset on Nov 22... After that, I suspect the days became too short to induce laying in the other two.

So, here we are in January, past the shortest day of the year... the next time we'll have a minimum of 9 hours and 45 minutes in a day is on January 15th... That's in 4 days... Guess who I caught investigating the nest boxes for the first time today? Yep... my two slackers.

Every wyandotte I've had has taken FOREVER to start. 8-9 months is not uncommon for these birds. I think others on here have had the same experience too.
