The Wyandotte Thread

Okay! Thank you everyone for your quick & informative responses. I feel much better now. I'll be sure to have my DH read your posts. He was getting ready to make dinner out of the free-loaders.
We're still learning the chicken business as we go and as we encounter different breeds.

I'll keep you all posted as to when they start to lay!

Hey everyone, I need some help with my 2 Colombian Wyandotte's. We got them as fertilized eggs from a local farmer in the spring and our wonderful Silkie hatched them at the end of May 2012.  We kept the 2 hens that hatched, gave the 2 roosters to a friend with a hobby farm.
The chickens are big, beautiful and healthy, but they have not started to lay eggs. They are now 7 months old!!
We also have 3 Ameracaunas that lay every other day and are healthy.
What's with the 2 free loaders?!
I have a BLRW pullet that laid her 1st egg New Years Eve day at 8 1/2months old & has now laid 9 eggs in the last 12 days :)

I have read that they are a slow maturing breed. But once they start laying they lay for years and don't get "spent" as fast as some of the other breeds. My Columbian Wyantdotte didn't start laying until she was 10 months old! It's seems like such a long time to wait for eggs!
