We love our wyandottes and would recommend them to anybodyNew to chickens. Thinking of getting some Wyandottes. Going to be the start of my first flock. What is the best way to get started. Either adults, chicks or eggs. and where do I get them. I live in Lebanon, pa. Thank You
. I think the easiest way is to purchase chicks. They are a slower maturing breed so you will have to feed them for awhile before they lay any eggs. Started birds are ideal if you want eggs right away. For me personally, I enjoy getting them as chicks and holding and socializing them. In some areas you can buy them at a local feed store. I don't know much about Lebanon, PA, but here in AR they are really easy to find. Otherwise you can contact a breeder or order from a hatchery. Depending on what type of incubator you purchase hatching eggs can prove to be difficult and incubators can be expensive. Plus, you have a 50/50 chance for hens and roosters. Started pullets (adolescent birds) will cost more, but you will have eggs much sooner. So in the end, it's basically a personal choice. Welcome to the chicken world! Be careful, they are soooo addicting! One more thought - if you are getting chickens for the first time, some other breeds that we really like that lay well and have wonderful personalities are Orpingtons and Speckled Sussexs. But you can't beat a wyandotte for good looks and a great personality. Once again, just my personal opinionNew to chickens. Thinking of getting some Wyandottes.
