The Wyandotte Thread

My Silver laced bantams. The last pic is the offspring of the other birds. The young hen has a little bit of smutt on her lacing the pic makes it look bad buts not as bad as it looks . Doesen't help they were moving.

Are Wyandottes supposed to be a broody breed? I have a columbian wyandotte that is only about 10 months old and she has been sitting on eggs for the past four days. Is this normal?
Yes, they can be very broodie even as young pullets. One of my one year old Blue Wyandottte hens that hatched three chicks just stole six chicks from a Cochin hen and is now raising 9. My CW hens will go broodie several times a year and are very hard to break...especially difficult when they are in a breeding pen and I'm trying to get eggs for hatching.

Lacing question:
I have my 1st SLWs, 9 pullets (and a cockerel), 13 1/2 weeks old (hatched 10-26) and wondering at what age they will give the best indicator of adult markings? Will they continue to lighten over the years/molts, as Speckled Sussex do? Just wondering; these were hatchery chicks obtained in a last gasp effort to supplement a broody hen's scant hatch (thanks to apathy vs recently diminished fertility in my 10 month Marans roo!) and we will be culling the majority of them. I also wonder about predicting the future build: the S.O.P. pics I see show SLWs with the body and a** of an Orpington - and mine are skinny little things yet compared to the Marans x Ameraucanas -

I could pretty much tell how my pullets markings looked like once they feathered out. Cockerels it took much longer. I would say if their markings are dirty at 3 months they will probably be that way when they grow up. Most hatchery wyandottes are very narrow or "stream lined". It just shows they look for laying ability not type.

I usually get a good idea of their type when they are 6 months or older. You won't be a 100% sure until they are fully mature (14-18 months). I start culling again at the 6 month point then become very picky at their maturity.

Here's an example of some of mine when they are still feathering out. These guys are probably only 2-3 months old in this picture.

Here are 2 I bought a few weeks ago. Not sure how pure they are. But there very pretty. Lay VERY small eggs.
Ya, they are pretty!

Those are some nice Wyandotte Bantams. I am knew to studying type and such but I judged commercial production birds and broilers in college at OSU. I was pretty good at so I am pretty good at reading the standard and learning. I am on here to learn more and to find some good breeder quality chicks to buy. I was directed to Pauls Poultry but I have emailed them three times and have not gotten a response yet. Do you or anyone know if they are still in business? On their website it looks as though they have not updated anything since 2011 so I am curious. They sure have awesome birds though. Thanks
