The Wyandotte Thread

I have 3 HUGE white wyandottes..... at least a pair, still not sure on genders. Are they popular rare or what? I know I don't see them much.... just trying to figure out if I should keep them or sell them. Trying to thin down the new breeds I have coming and I just don't know anything about the Whites. I don't see anything wrong with them. Their size is impressive, they are soooooo much bigger than the other birds with them.... even the BLRW. No I don't have any pictures..... sorry. I was just going through my pens to find some pullets to sell and got to thinking about keeping them or not.

Anybody?

Keep the Whites as they will show you the true type and size of what a Wyandotte should look like in comparison to your BLR.
Whites are common but that does not mean you should get rid of them, they are one of the most beautiful varieties of Wyandottes in my opinion.

I don't think they are common around here. I have never seen them. I thought about that.... type would be easy to see in them. They are pretty and probably "easier" than BLRW or SLW. These colored birds are not easy to get right.

I did get them from Foley. I felt the same way, I just don't see enough gold to be getting the brown chicks either. I will keep an eye on them. Maybe I will keep hatching them if I am only going to be getting about 1/2 that are usable. I am going to look the pullets over again.... maybe it is coming from a pullet

I am tempted to check with Jerry and see if I can buy another pair more SILVER. IDK.... just thinking. I really like them they are really cute... the roo has a little attitude but don't they all. I think I will give the other roo another chance and maybe a different pullet. Maybe the other one was not letting him mount her.

It just goes to show you that you never really know what will show up when you breed two birds together. I talked to Jerry the other day and have seen his breeders and yours are as Silver as his are in my opinion. Try the other cockerel and see if his fertility has improved. You mentioned that one of the females was being bossy. Sometimes you need to put the male into a pen and then place the female into that pen. If you trade out males the females may be too choosy and not allow the second male to breed with her as she doesnt recognize his dominance.

You are exactly right. Many young breeders get lost in the colored varieties not realizing the difficulty in raising them.
Whites, Blacks, Buffs and Blues would be the best varieties for beginners as they will learn to see what type should look like while having success with much more established varieties.

But it is true. I try to tell people they are hard to breed but they still want them. Copper Marans are the worst right now. Just too hard to get everything right and then you have all the other junk that has been mixed in to muddy the waters too.

I would like something EASY for a little while. White Wyandottes and White Ams are in my future I guess.

Can all you experts give me a few guesses on the gender of this BLRW chick. Im thinking pullet as her hatchmates have already been rehomed because they looked like roos 1-2 weeks ago. She is 6 weeks old. No comb growth at all and it is just now starting to turn from black/yellow to pink towards the back. Not very feathered for 6 weeks??? thanks!

I would say pullet. My male Wyandotte babies start having flaming red combs by two weeks. She is also pretty feathered out. My boys have fuzzy butts at 2 months or longer sometimes.
