The Wyandotte Thread

Thank you all very much for the advice. I have considered the time and money involved in such a plan, and am willing to put up with the costs. I've seen many very beautiful GLW up to standard, but would like to try my hand at this process. Delisha and ki4got, thank you for the warnings. Though I will still continue with my plan, I appreciate the advice.

I already have pens and coops built, which are out in countryside with enough acreage for me to free range on a rotational schedule. I know a grain maker very well who is willing to give me feed at a generous price. I've had birds before, but they've been mutts for several years.

Ki4got- I've heard 'an heir and a spare,' in regards to roosters, and I find it very good advice to follow.

I've seen people keeping hens and cockerels for upwards of two years to see how they really grow. I recall someone keeping hens for five or six years to monitor egg production and broodiness and breeding based on that, and I think that is good in theory, but that it will take up a lot of space and money. I think that I would use the idea much later in the project, when I'm not culling so hard and can refocus on vigor to make sure it isn't going unchecked.

Thank you for the info on lacing. I'm seeing a lot of hatchery birds with very thick lacing, almost to where the gold is hardly visible

He is very pretty..nice front. You have beautiful birds. I should say he is really ugly, you should pack him up and send him to me.

If I can get any to hatch maybe I can start sending them off! Lol. If it's not one thing it's another. Last year I had perfect fertility but no eggs due to heat and now I have eggs but no fertility!
Also the same for your boy in your profile ;). How bout I take your "ugly" rooster and then you take my "ugly" boy XD haha

There are 17 broody hens in my flock right now...three Cochin and the rest are Wyandotte....many first timers. GAGH!
I've given eggs to a few of them, but am trying to break the others. I just built an outside pen and will put a minimal coop for shelter with only a roost for sleeping. Those girls are going in there today and I'm hoping the change will break them.
The rest of the flock is laying and free-ranging....getting between a dozen and 2 dozen eggs a day from them.

Sure have been some pretty birds posted.
Dracoe19, keep the cockerel...try him on a nice typey hen with a nice back line and comb and see what pops. I like his form and stance.

i just ordered 2 more SLW pullets and a rooster after i lost all but one lone pullet to Coccidia a couple weeks ago. also ordered 4 st. run BLRWs, all from McMurray hatchery. i hoped to find some locally but after about 10 calls and lots of email and weekly flee's, i couldnt find any. wondering if the quality has gone up on the BLRW from Mcmurray? havent really seen anyone with one recently, only from a year or more ago... but if they all end up being splash, ill probably just sell them off.

here is my last SLW pullet that survived the outbreak (also lost 3 EEs :( ). she seems strong so hopefully she grows up healthy! she is about 7 weeks i think, but i dont really keep track...

Thank you all for the advice about the cockerel. Looks like Mr.Bachelor is hitting it big and will be getting some ladies soon.
