The Wyandotte Thread

I've sexed mine as they hatch by the feathers then just mark any extra males.

Are yours hatchery or breeder birds? I just read in another thread that breeder birds wouldn't be sexable by feathers at hatch..?

mine are breeder birds and I've not been wrong once I figured out the fully fluffy wing feathers if you can't see the feather tips, usually is a female.

I am on my first batch of chickens and I was lucky enough to get a BLRWyandotte girl. Yay!

She is almost 5 weeks and I wanted to post here and hopefully get some comments on how her lacing is shaping up - what quality of bird she is going to be. While "So Cute" is always nice to hear I would like to learn more about how to evaluate the breed and gain some knowledge.

I think she is gonna be beautiful - but what do I know?

Hi im new to BYC, as well as posting in general.
RobbingPeter your little BLR wyandotte is a bute for sure, now im not an old pro breeder of wyandottes, and I haven't raised BLR's before either and It's always hard to tell with young chicks. I usually evaluate my chicks for show quality once theye have pased the "teenage stage" and nearly adults.
So far her color and lacing looks good, could use more lacing on her cushin (feathers before the tail "saddle" on a male bird) type wise, it's hard to tell type when theye are young, but to me, it looks as though she may have a fairly flat back with a some what abrupt tail base, not really a nice gental sweep simalue to some cochins.
As I've said in my opinion I think it's to early to tell for show quality, my advise would be to raise her up a little more and evaluate her later.
If your serious about show quality, attend more shows, talk to judges, and I recomend looking into a APA or ABA standard. Good luck with your chicks and I hope to see an updated picture when shes older.

Hi, I am also new to BYC. I am planning on showing breeding SLW and BLRW so I was very excited to find this tread and have read through all 72 pages! Many beautiful pictures and lots of very helpful information, thank you to all that contributed. My first hopeful SQ birds are ordered day old chicks from Foley's Waterfowl. Hoping for at least one show quality hen and roo, have ordered 19. I have a question for the group, as I was reading about inbreeding depression, should I order chicks from another top breeder to cross back and forth? Or is starting out with birds from one breeder suffient? Thank you for any input, I would like to start out right.

here is what I did. I purchased eggs from 2 different sources. from those chicks, I culled down to the best 4 and purchased another set of eggs, keeping back a new rooster and another hen and used those chicks to create my own line.
these are now the birds I am producing. some lines work well together and others, just don't work. some have better toplines, tail sets, lacing so you will have to take the best you can get, combine them and go from there. if you like what you produce, great, if not, try some new blood but make sure you give the birds time to grow out before you decide for long term reasons.
by buying from the best, you are cutting down on some work to produce better birds but do you want to be showing "your" birds or ones you bought from someone else? personally, I want to show my own, show what I am producing and show people I can take it to a higher level.

Thanks for your input Hoppy. I looked at your page and you have beautiful birds. I have BLRW eggs in the incubator, I don't think they are going to be the quality of Foley's but I will have to wait and see (if any hatch -- they were shipped). I don't mind showing someone elses birds to begin with, but yes I do eventually want to show my own once I have produced ones that are show worthy.
