The Wyandotte Thread

Here are my ~3 week old Wyandotte chicks. I know it's early but I'm wondering if Buttercup looks a little roo-ish. She's bigger than Daisy or Little Blue who all came in the same hatchery shipment to the feed store. She is more feathered (pretty feathers already), but has almost no tail feather relative to the rest, including 3 other types from within a day or two of age.

I've had a blast raising our chicks. We have a GLW & SLW. My question is regarding gender of the GLW. At 5.5wks, a red comb and wattles developed almost overnight. At 6wks, the green iridescent sheen developed on the black parts of his feathers. We listed him on CL (& BYC) this last weekend but this morning I got a message from a BYC'er that thought he looked like a girl.

He definitely is low on the pecking order (and always has), about 5th or 6th for our 6 chicks (all the same age). He is smaller than our SLW, has a bit more green, and has slightly more red wattles than the SLW (which we hope is a girl too).

Is it possible for him to still be a pullet even with these secondary characteristics developing?

If you would like to see 'his' pictures: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=4002956#p4002956

Thank
you all for your help!!!

I have a trio of SLW for sale show quality, Roo is overton stock, from Buddy Henry, One of the hens is a guardhouse hen, and the other is a cross of Overton And Foley.

It is too hot here to ship, so right now would be local pick up. They are about a year old. I also have a few other hens for sale 50.00 each all show quality just have a few to many.
Located in Pensacola, FLorida.

Thanks,

Storytime.... After waiting what seemed extra long for my BLRW to mature and start to lay this year. My only female-yes in total only 3 eggs hatched and 2 are roos-my BLRW hen layed approx 1 dozen eggs and then had a massive vent prolapse. I took her to the vet b/c well, this bird cost me some money already... The vet says well it looks pretty bad (just as I thought). I had tried hemmorhoid cream , honey, antibiotic etc and it wasn't making a difference and was turning necrotic. The vet said we can try surgery but its about 50/50 that it'll not blow out again and it'll cost you $500 plus to even have it.

Of course, that was not great news. So, I said I'll have to find someone who'll put her down. ( I won't do it myself) She then said that she would take her for an experimental surgery at a cont ed seminar to remove her ovaries so essentially she would be a non laying hen. I signed her over and it cost me $135 to donate a chicken to science. Not sure if she is alive or not...

Fortunately, (or so I thought at the time) every egg she layed I incubated which out of the dozen I incubated 4 hatched out. They are approxmitely 3 months old and every one of them looks to be a Roo!!!

Hi. I have been enjoying the photos on this thread, and would like to purchase some wyandotte pullets one of these days.

I have a pullet that is laced - not sure if she is wyandotte or maybe a partial wyandotte. She has a single comb, which I know is wrong for the breed (and I'm not thinking of breeding her), but I am curious if you think she is a wyandotte.

Here's a photo taken at about 9 weeks old:

and this one was taking when she was much younger, maybe 3-4 weeks

I need to take a more updated photo - her lacing has gotten much better now and she is fuller in body-type.

Thanks,
Melissa

Hi,
I am new to Wyandottes and trying to understand the colors. I have 3, a splash, a blue and a black. My question is about the black. She was hatched out of two blues, so, if she is mated with another black will the babies be black? Or can I still get a variety of colors? I've seen charts that show percentages of the colors you will get with different crosses, but I haven't seen it shown what you get with BLK X BLK? Someone told me white???
Thanks,

black to black will produce black unless it's a recessive black, then it could be hiding some other color but if we are talking B/B/S (to the same black- then you get all black)

How would I know if it's a recessive blacK? What does B/B/S mean? I'm sorry, I don't know anything. How can you tell if your chicken is black and not just really dark blue? Is there a section of feathers to check or something that can give you a clue?

Thanks,

look in the fluff under the feathers. We have BLRW chicks growing out that look to be black laced, but when you pick them up and look at the under feathers they are turning dark blue. BBS is blue, black and splash.
