The Wyandotte Thread

Question for trivial pursuit, I have a splash BLRW hen, and a golden wyandotte rooster. Is it possible to breed the two together and get a true BLR? I have a BLRW black rooster, where it should be blue its black instead, but he is infertile and I need to get rid of him. Would mixing these two be a good idea, or should I avoid doing this?

Genetically speaking the GoldLaced and the black phase of the BLR are two different birds. From what I have read on here, you will get inferior colouring of the GL and brassy colouring on the BLR with alot of shafting in its feathers.

Just got around to taking a picture. Can you see that the blue lacing on her upper chest is dark grey instead of the same blue as her body? Waiting to see a picture of your hen

I have 4 eggs due to hatch next week from this combination of my splash, Greg Catt line rooster over a blue, Paul's Poultry (when his were still pure Lowell Barber stock) hen. Hoping to get some more beauties like this girl

I have an awesome rooster chick out of a black laced red hen from Foley's lines and a splash, Blue Poultry rooster that I plan to use with the pullets for next years hatches.

Oh wow... if her lacing is to gray for you just send her my way!

I'll try and get a pic of mine tomorrow... she's alittle darker I think then yours.

Oh, good! I'll be looking forward to your pictures

I've seen much worse and often. In fact, I was going to comment that the hackel lacing was some of the best I've seen on BLRs.

Thank-you!

I realized after posting the picture that the color is washed out. She is actually a shade darker and the lacing on her chest is darker as well. Her nice yellow legs don't show in the picture either.

The slate on her chest is just a part of being blue. Phooey, if you were in Ky, I'd buy her from you!

I bought three pullets a little over a month ago and was told this one was an ameracauna. I assumed that meant she was going to be an EE, but her legs were almost white so that didn't seem right. Picked her up anyway hoping I was just being suspicious. Thinking now she may just be a SLW cross, I think shes between 10 and 12 weeks old. What do you guys think??
Three girls I got together, the mystery, a GLW ( bad lacing so far, I know, lol), and a light brahma

Could you explain to this newbie what shafting in the feathers means?

A lighter color stripe in the middle of the feather along its shaft than the surrounding gold or red. Looks like a thin racing stripe in each feather.
