Really great info! Had a look at them again today, their tails definitely aren't /\ shaped like the last picture, defintely more rounded at the top in the form of a horse shoe, their tail feathers are longer now and more pronounced, the salmon tails still have more soft feathering than the splash blue red laced though. Will try and get some pics of them if it ever stops raining here!

The horse shoe shape bust be Foleys interpretation of the SOP. I hadn't heard about that kind of tail until a met him and just figured I should breed toward it since he was and he knows much more than I do.

His mind must have been elsewhere or something. In that same type of conversation he expressed the proper shape. He has written about dislike for bunny tails on Showbirdbid.com . That is a great place to learn about Wyandottes. Many threads of super knowledgeable fanciers there. I get lost there for hours. The Chocolate gene is a fairly new wave here is the US and I pray that the bunny tails from the imports don't find their way onto many differrent breeds of birds. If the choc gene is experimented with by knowledgeable breeders like Foley, you end up with birds bred to the US SOP. He did a fenomenale job with the Choc Wyandotte Bantams. thanks for those images... they showed much more clearly what i was trying to describe, with my not-so-great camera. 8)


it seems my 3 breeds of choice are so drastically different in overall shape. from the long/low barge-shaped dorkings to the super-fluffball cochins, the wyandotte seems to be somewhere in the middle. my breed choices had nothing to do with shape and everything to do with personality btw... it's hard to say who's the best. the cochin has been my favorite for going on 20 years, the dorking going on 2 years and wyandottes are new to me, but all equally awesome in personality and temperament.

Wyandottes are my passion. I have had many breeds over the years but, always come back to the Dottes. I have found within the wyandotte breed there are different lines that carry different manerisms and physical traits. You can almost tell who the breeder is by the look and character of the bird. Chickies are fun and highly addictive! There is so much more to chicken land than people even know.

Looking at all the SOP's and seeing no one else really knows about it I'll just stick with the SOP I originally learned and the ones on here. Thankfully I didn't miss interpret it and just got confused when I was talking to someone about this kind of tail. Definitely confusing sometimes when hearing so much from everyone. Glad this thread is here.

A few questions, a horse shoe curves round at the bottom like the second picture but is named bunny, so getting even more confused

what is an SOP ?

I would just ignore the picture I drew. It has just been making things more confusing and I guess I am just bad at explaining what I was shown/ told.

His slw and partridge(what he mainly shows) do not have bunny tails. The roosters are supposed to have a rounded tail.

OK..

Now I found this video and it shows both eamples within the group.. one has a pronouced /\ shape whilst the others have very full feathered rounder tails like mine.

WOW! there is a big difference in the tail shapes here on the video of the chocolates. It seems they are not of one type , how could they met the sop. Just wondering. Gloria jean
