Where I live we have lions,tigers, bears oh my!!!- not literally but I was wondering some things to keep away the predators?

1. A good electric fence system with a wire along the top and offset along the bottom - minimum, and a quality electric charger. That is the best deterrent I've heard of. .


2. A mature, well trained livestock guardian dog or two. This does very well especially in combo with #2.


3. A guard donkey or guard llama to alert you to danger . . . perimeter lights along the fenceline . . . these aren't as effective but might help.

4. A good solid perimeter fence that goes around the animals -- best if buried in the ground at least a few inches to combat digging.

I'm sure there's lots more ideas in the coop building / predator sections in the chicken section of the forum . . .

Dogs, dogs, dogs, and more dogs. Where I live I have found that the only real deterrent is having my 3 great Pyrenees patrol my property. They tend to keep all the big and small stuff away. and if somethings to big to handle I hear the barking and ill be out there with a loaded gun within a minute or two.

i agree dogs work well at my house with both animals and humans.

This may be an odd suggestion... but I've heard it works for people out in the sticks, so this may be worth trying for someone that live out on significant acreage.

If large predators cross your property on their route (coyotes, mountain lions etc), host a huge extended family barbecue. Feed the gents LOTS of meat and some beer. Then send everyone out to "mark" your territory!

It seems the animals prefer not to get into the territory of another large carnivore.

^^^^^ YES! Actually I think I saw it on TV.

People who were out in the sticks on a survival show, I think it was alaska or canada, had a pack of wolves nearby and so they did "number ones" round the cabin and the wolves and bears stayed away...
It worked!

Slightly different situation but there you go.

We run two Great Pyrenees. No two four or winged intruders here. Our boy is over 200lbs now and is priceless. The girl is around 90-100 and has a growl to scare the best of them.
