Their here! McMurray chicks arrived a day early

I got mine this morning too. Not all were alive, but was able to catch a few of them that were dying before I got them. They were still moving so I put them by the fireplace, and gave them some TLC with prayer. I lost 38 of them before I left for work. That should leave me 51 or more with all the free chicks they gave me. I am just happy that most of them made it.

My girls and guys are 4 days old today. On the care sheet it said that you can take up the paper towel and introduce them to the shavings (pine). I did that, and now I am worried do you guys think that they will be okay? They are having a very good time in the shavings, I know this because it is flying every where...lol

Hi everybody! I'm new to the chicken-raising thing, and recently bought 11 chicks from a local feed store. We had an old coop from the people who used to live on my mom's property, and it's 8x16. How many chickens can I fit in there??? I'm wanting to get some more from Murray McMurray (sp?) or whatever that hatchery is but I don't know how many I can fit. I've been told to average about 2 sq feet per adult chicken (I have RIR and three white leghorns) and I'm pretty sure that if I do 8 x 16 / 2 = total number of chicks possible but I want to make sure. Thanks! Also, any tips for saving money and raising chicks would be helpful, as I said I'm a first-timer!

from what I read on here they say 4 sq. feet per bird...so if you have 11 you have to figure that when they get bigger that is 44 sq. feet right there. So your 8x16 is 128 sq. feet so figure from there. So that leaves you with 84 sq. feet let. If my calculations are right. You have room for a few more chickens. Your run should be 10 sq. feet per. Unless you are going to free range. I learned that on here...lol

Actually, the four square feet per bird includes the run area if the birds are outside more than inside the coop. Have fun!
