In the Brooder
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
"I" started raising chickens last summer (2019) with 18 pullets of unknown gender and "unknown breed". I say "I" because raising chickens is actually a joint venture between my lifelong best friend and me which has developed into raising chickens and rabbits...soon to become raising chickens, rabbits and quail. I say "unknown breed", because neither of us knew much about what we were getting ourselves into, least of all what breed we brought to the "barn" (don't ask) from one of the tractor and farm stores in town. At a nice discount I might add.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Currently raising 12 hens and 1 rooster, having arrived at this number through a few additions and subtractions over the last 6 months, each an occasion for increased anxiety and more gray hairs (didn't need more). Oh yeah...and increased knowledge of course.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Still debating that one, but through an arbitrary addition to the coop we are debating a definitely mixed flock.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Eggs...in abundance.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Hobbies (which I never have time or opportunity to indulge in) include fishing (hard and soft water), hiking/backpacking/camping, relaxing...etc. I'd also spend time developing small business activities such as woodworking (ideas include bed headboards and hiking sticks), hiking/backpacking/camping stoves (alcohol and woodburning models would be available at a modest price). Alas, time is the one element that I lack.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Yes, that's a lengthy adventure we should discuss over coffee and continue through a hiking/backpacking/camping adventure some day (seeing a pattern developing?), but in brief:
1 beautiful wife who often puts up with my shenanigans
2 adult-age sons
2 adult-age daughters
3 dogs
5 cats
2 rabbits (not included in the "barn" livestock group)
1 tortoise
1 bird (zebra finch)
I'm retired military who has since worked in the automotive industry as Production Supervisor (4 yrs) and Die Setter (10 yrs), now in the orthopedic appliance industry as CNC machinist (2 months).
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC a couple years ago while researching the topics of discussion of this forum and have frequently referred to the wealth of knowledge and experience I found within its threads. I've been a "taking" so much that it now may be possible to "give" back to others here...those, like me, who are lucky enough to find us.
