For the past couple weeks my chick (4 weeks old) has a terrible limp. When she walks its like she is dizzy and is always standing on her right legs. When she sits her left leg is always stretched out. I think she broke or dislocated her leg, but im not sure. She is eating and drinking fine, however she has cross beak and eating is difficult for her. Her and our rooster ( who takes VERY good care of her and never lets her out of his sight) are the only two chickens we have and are kept as pets. Here are a few pictures to help you get a better image. Please help i feel bad for her because she has so many problems. I was going to take her to the vet but living in the city thats hard, and cost $75 for a check up. I feel like she is getting worse every day please help! What do you think i should do? And what do you think it is?

Welcome to BYC!

I am so sorry about your baby. It is never easy to see them suffer. Many times cross beaks have other genetic disorders. If she were my bird, I would put her in a very small cage so she has very limited movement. Keep food and water close by. This way she has no choice but to stay off the leg. If this is a sprain, it can heal if she can stay off of it. Even a break can heal, although not perfect, if they stay off the legs for a while. This is what I would do, And I would keep her caged for about 3 weeks.

Because she is a cross beak, she may also be lacking in vitamins and minerals. So I would add vitamins to her water every other day. You know what else might help is apple cider vinegar. ACV is a natural inflammation reducer, in case she does have a sprain. 3/4 teaspoon per quart of water, plastic only. I would alternate the ACV water and vitamins every day in hopes to reduce inflammation and pump up her immune system.

You might post this in our emergency section for more help too..

Good luck with your baby and I hope she makes a full recovery.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! So sorry about your girl, TwoCrows gave you some good advice, X2 on posting in the Emergencies forum about her that TwoCrows linked for you.

I have read that for cross beak, you can use a nail file and reshape the beak so that they can eat and drink normally. Does you hen bend her leg at all? Is there a wound on her leg like an animal bite or a small wound? How are the pads of her feet?

Thank you so much this was a great help! I will do what you said and see if she gets better!

She occasionally bends her leg, although she tries not to, and her look a bit crooked. There is no wounds and the pads of her feet appear fine.

We took my hen to the vet after all and it turns out she atr metal and is now taking medicine to make it a liquid so he can poop it out!
