There must be a lot of chickens in Hawaii?

YUUUUP!!!

I always get to hear the roosters crow when I go to work at 5am. Come to think of it, they crow all the time... everywhere.

Some catch them and eat them. Free food.

Sorry I'm late on this post, but I feel that I have to correct a few things. Kauai is the only MAIN island without mongoose which are the only natural predators of chickens here in Hawaii. Kauai is over run with chickens because besides having no natural predators, all the domestic chickens (and their coops) were literally blown all over the place during hurricane Iniki. They are not protected, and are in fact considered a nuisance by many. The rest of the main islands have lots of chickens running wild. The wild chickens are even considered their own species. And yes, you should be ashamed of watching the Dog.

I can answer this one!

I was on Maui in July! There were many, many chickens on the north and east side of the island. A lot of them seemed truly feral, they were in the middle of forest or begging for scraps by some spots along the road. The rest stop on road to Hana had a LOT of chickens. Saw like 20-30 there! They all looked like "mostly OEG type".

Did not see any feral chickens in the valley or west end(Kaanapali where we stayed) but we heard a lot of chickens in different backyards. We also saw several chickens, not sure if feral or belonging to someone in Kalahui yards & walking along the road. There were even a small flock right in the car rental return lot at the Kalahui airport?!

Correct, it is Kauai sometimes called "Chicken Island" due to the very high numbers of chickens there, due to lack of mongoose there. But, even their chickens look OEG or mostly OEG mixes(and seems a lot of Kauai chickens are very nicely mottled). Not sure why some think they are a species.. also the problem with hurricane theory is there were already chickens there.. maybe hurricane helped but they'd have eventually spread all over anyways..

A bonus: got to see 4 peafowl along the road to Hana! We also saw rather a lot of mongoose.. and a feral pig.

I'm in Guam and we get imports of chickens from HI ALL the time, so yea they have a wholelotta chickens

This fella was wandering around Key West this summer. As some have mentioned here, Key West is loaded with chickens...they just roam around the city. We were there in June, and I could hear (never saw them...must have been well hidden) lots of chicks peeping.

My MIL and FIL went there about 2 years ago for 10 days. They said they were running around in parking lots and asked the locals what was up.
They said a Hurricane came many years ago and they have been running wild since.
