There was a coon in with my chickens when I went to lock them up!!!!

"but a relocated coon is a problem for some other chicken owner."
it can also be illeagal and potentially dangerous.

Any old timer will tell you that a coon has to be taken 100 miles so it won`t come back. With fuel and time restraints as they are, a .22 slug is only a few cents(still). Put it in a bag and out with the garbage......Pop

same here - you would have to see our neighbors property. It has old old old chicken houses everywhere and it is overgrown now so there are a lot of places for any kind of varmints to hide.

I will get a trap tomorrow for sure! But what do you do with raccoons? Do they come back if you drop off a couple of miles away?

You asked what to do with the raccoons ? Talk to some of the oldtimers in your area....chances are an older person might want that coon to eat!! My FIL used to fix them just like a roast....toss in a crockpot , add mushroom soup, potatoes, carrots and onions and you have a feast !!!
Also ...some trappers might pay for the furs? ....ask around ...you might find a taker....but a relocated coon is a problem for some other chicken owner.

Gotcha

- so it would be best to kill & bury it if I can't anyone that wants a raccoon feast

or the fur?

Yep been there and done that.....also used knives in the kitchen one night. Long cute story. hahahaha

As for those coon...you betcha...shovel, pitchfork, baseball bat, trap, gun whatever it takes.

flopshot - I didn't think about either of those possible problems either. That is another reason why I love this forum!

When I was a kid Grandpa had a bunch of coon hounds. He bred them & trained them. He'd have loved to have had a freshly trapped coon to train his dogs. That probably isn't considered ethical these days, but with so many surplus coons in some areas, maybe ya'll should buddy up to locals with redbones or blue ticks...

I will be carrying some sort of weapon with me when I go to lock them up from now on! I probably would have had better luck with a knife than with a pellet gun - raccoons can really move fast!
