My girls and Roo had one big grasshopper they were all fighting over, the Roo winning but then the girls got it and played keep away until all managed to get a piece. It was one amazing free for all to witness.... I did feel a little sorry for the poor grasshopper...

My 7 year old and I catch grasshoppers and crickets to toss in the pen... it is amazing how simplicity is so entertaining! The best part is the "talking" taking place among the birds... my son "translates" for me. "Get away... this is mine" or "can't catch me" is usually what he says.

My son and I tried to find them some yesterday but it has been so hot and dry here we did not find 1 bug.... So I am sure they thought that one grasshopper was dessert at a five star reastraunt lol.

My girls are free range unless I cant watch them so I have a GIANT chicken run for them. Since I live in Oregon there is a ton of bugs and critters. Well one day I go out to the chicken pen to feed them and I see them all squabling in a mess of feathers and noise. One emerges and its the dominate hen. She was carring a dang mouse in her mouth!!! It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen! They were flipping it in the air and pecking at it until it finally did die and then they ate it. I am still in shock over that day!

Who would have known... My chickens are picking up the slack the cats have been sleeping on the job again I guess.

I live in Texas...hot as heck!!
But thats when all the grasshoppers come out to search for water!
My daughter & I decided one day (since we seen thousands of grasshoppers on the road)...
to catch a bunch for the chickens!!

We did just that!...then put them in storage bags in the freezer!
Now my chickens arent free range...but they get special treats & I didnt have to spend a DIME!!

Its just weird to open up my freezer for dinner & see 3-5 bags of grasshoppers!!

I love the idea of grasshopper freezer pops! We live in Southern Ca and I was shocked I could find no bugs. I will be on the lookout for the grasshoppers!

get an old pasta sauce or mayo jar....
add a teaspoon of sugar/honey whatever & 3 tablespoons of water....
just enough to to cover the bottom.
put a hole bout the size of a pea in the top!

Set it on the ground r hang it in the trees!
& watch the buggies come knockin!!

Then once a week....dump it in the storage bags & freezer!

then do it all over again!!

I get flies, beetles, scorpions, ants....all kinds of bugs for my chickens!!
Just not grasshoppers!!

Yesterday I tossed a dead toad in the run (I had accidently weed-eated him...sorry, wrong place wrong time) They have not eaten the toad, he's now a very flat dead toad, having been run and passed from chicken to chicken all afternoon. Went to retrieve it this morning and they had hidden it...was just out there and it's back again, like some discarded toy.
