I expect to have a full egg turner in my incubator and want to use a supplemental calibrated thermometer but room will be tight. Would it be OK for the thermometer to rest on top of the eggs or will that interfere with the movement of the egg turner and possible damage the eggs?

What kind of incubator? With a styrofoam, you can stab it straight through the side of the bottom to the side of the turner, you'd poke it through straight across from the turner motor.

a digital meter with a probe would work but I want to keep the number of batteries and disposal thereof to a minimum. if I could find a "meat thermometer" of the proper temp range for incubating, poking it through the side of the bator would be a good option but cannot locate one locally and do not have time to order one.

Do you have a Wal-Mart? They stock dial food thermometers that go the full range, I just bought some there not too long ago.
