thermometer trouble

Actually, the Accurites are not very accurate at all. I have seen as much as a 5* difference between the thermometer and its external probe. A good mercury themometer is really hard to beat, and also hard to find.

JFI. Depending on how handy you are taking things apart and putting them back together again, the accurite thermometers should have a potentometer inside the case that would allow you to calibrate the internal and external sensors. This would mean taking the thing apart, looking for the potentometers and fiddeling with them until they read where they should. Nothing to lose really, if it aint reading right and you screw it up, you havent lost anything. I have a old one I think I will take apart and see if it can be adjusted. If so, I'll take a few pics to show how its done.

Edited to say, I took my Accurite digital thermometer apart to check for adjustable potenometers. There are no adjustments or calibation provisions with these type thermometers. It either works or it dont and unless you know quite a bit about electronic circuits, its best to not take your digital thermometer apart.

I am far from a hatching expert but I can't trust my accurite. When the humidity is up it reads a lower temp. My most accurate has been my plain old meat thermometer that I stick in through one of the holes in the top of my LG. It is a few years old and I am not sure if it is mercury or not but I can't find a mercury one anywhere now. If this is an important batch I would see if you can borrow one that someone has already worked out the kinks on. Otherwise, it seems to be trial and error with the less expensive ones. Good luck!!!

I hope you don't mind me answering, but here are a few places to check...

Double R Supply Cost is $28.99 for a "Spot Check" version shipped to me here in Alabama (free shipping). I've never dealt with them...??? Looks like they offer more than just incubation supplies. (Florida)

Brinsea Cost looks like $29.99 shipping included for a "Spot Check" version shipped to Alabama...seems to have a good reputation. Merchandise offered is limited to incubators and incubating accessories. (Florida)

Cutler Supply Cost looks like $29.75 for "Egg Temp" version shipped to Alabama. Very good experience dealing with them and they carry much more than just incubation supplies so you could pick up a few other things you needed and actually lower the shipping costs (average it out) of the thermometer....but, it's got a different label on it than the "Spot Check". (Michigan)

I hope this helps,
Ed

Unless I made a mistake with my calculations it costs an extra $Dollar to purchase the thermometer through Amazon but yet get it from the same vendor (Double R Supply). Amazon isn't there for the fun of it for sure.
