Last year I bought an LG and its egg turner. Both came with the little glass thermometer stapled on the card. The problem was, the chart was printed on the card and the positioning of the glass was different on each card.
Call me crazy, but doesn't that mean the bottom line on each one is different? How in the world could that be accurate?
So I tossed them and bought two digitals.
This year I read in BYC about using the suction cupped Wallyworld aquarium thermometers @ $2 each. Cheap and accurate. So DH and I visit the local Wallyworld and find the aquarium supplies. ( When did they stop selling fish?)
There is the suction cupped glass thermometer! $1.79! I pick up two and notice they do not read the same temperature even though they hang side by side on the rack. Accurate? Maybe at YOUR wallyworld.
So, what to do? I find two relatively cheap digitals with hygrometers: $7.99 They both read the same in store. ( Note to self: battery is not in and display is covered with printed film showing temperature.) Purchase two and insert batteries, remove printed temp film and place on kitchen table to stabilize. They both read same temp (YES!) and within 3 % the same humidity.
So now we hatch with one old and one new digital in the bator and also in the hatcher. It seems to work well.

But why are they still selling those small glass tubes fastened at various places to the printed card?
Am I crazy?

I think they just include those with the foam bators so the beginner will have something to start with. I have a GQF dial thermometer that is pretty accurate. Also IMO the best digital thermometer is the medical ones you can get at the pharmacy. I use the two together and they are within .2 degrees of each other. My last hatch (yesterday) had a 97% hatch rate. 78 out of 80!
