I can "third" the recommendation of the Red Sex Links. I've got half my flock in them too. While it is fun to experiment with other breeds, and get specialized egg colors, the backbone of my laying flock is Red Sex Links.
They are very sweet tempered, friendly, quiet, well behaved little birds that lay large eggs...their eggs are generally a rich red-brown (not dark as a Welsummer, but the same type of rich red tones).
I wouldn't have my flock without them.
