Thought I'd share some pictures of our JM Hatchery rangers...born 6/3/09. We received 36 and have 35 in the pen. One dislocated a hip at 3 weeks and became a snack!

Very healthy and active birds, if not the brightest;) Looking forward to taking them in at 12 weeks, although I am sure to bonk one or two to sample.

Thanks very much for sharing these. I was just contemplating Rangers. And debating where to place my order next year. Nice to see such beautiful birds.

And you are right. That one is just to pretty to go. Maybe you have a friend who wants a pet chicken.

Mine were hatched the same days as yours. Wish I'd have gotten a female Tricolor like yours, mine are all boys.

Jaku, you get a mix of three varieties when you order. The redbro, tricolor, and a yellow/buff color.

These are colored range birds, not "Rangers". I'm only mentioning that so as not to cause confusion as some hatcheries are still selling "rangers", just not J&M. I have some also, and absolutely love them. I too only had one of the darker hens as shown in the bottom photo. I was kind of bummed as I am planning on keeping a few over the winter. I also have the Dixie Rainbows from S&G and they look the same, except with a few more colors mixed in.

I really like your birds- it would be nice to have some meaties that were actually pretty. I know it's been posted a thousand times, but I never paid attention because I only do Cornish X's, but how much less meat do these have compared to the Cornish X's? I might try a batch for fun this fall. I know they take a bit longer to finish, but a comparison of meat yield at finish would be great.

Thanks for the comments. This is my first time raising a true meat bird so can't answer the details. I am expecting a 3+ lb dressed bird at 12 weeks and don't think I'll be disappointed.

Of the 3 tri color's I received, 2 are pullets. They both look plump and tasty though;)

These birds love to eat (250 lbs of food so far) and delight in eating weeds and grass as well.

And yep, JM Hatchery calls these "colored range broilers", http://www.jmhatchery.com/ , I am VERY pleased and plan to get more next year.
