They are eating their own eggs!

My girls just started laying. I found a half shell of an egg this morning. Then a hen layed one and then another one broke it and they all started eating it! What to do?

What's their diet? Nest bedding? Do they access to oyster shells? Are they fighting over boxes?

Was the shell soft? That is extremely common for pullets first eggs to be soft and then eaten.

Seemed to be. The other eggs I got seem strong. Only gotten 4 so far.

It is, but I'd also feed crushed oyster shell on the side as feeding eggshells back isn't going to be enough calcium on its own

I feed both egg shells and oyster shell. Anybody who wants an extra boost can get oyster shell whenever, but they seem to like the egg shells I put out periodically more.
