Great idea! I was wondering what I could use to cover my nest boxes! Because I use 10 gallon plastic commercial planters as nest boxes, I've been covering the openings with ceramic drip pans the same size as the openings, but those have risks if they're dislodged by the chickens and fall (the nest boxes are on a frame 4 feet from the ground). A curtain would work as well and be much safer! Thanks! My chickens are finally roosting! I'm so proud! I hung a curtain over the nest boxes last week and they have slowly began to stop sleeping there! Maybe this discouraged them from sleeping in the boxes? Or are they just growing up?
Four of my chickens refuse to 'roost' on their 2x2" perches and prefer to sit cock-eyed on top of a 4x4 instead. They have an 'open air' coop for the summer because it's so hot here and although they have two walls of straw bales and a roof, I'm afraid one of them will get blown off during the night by a big gust of wind, or even more likely will just fall off. They can't possibly have a 'grip' on a 4"-wide board.
I guess the best thing to do would be to put another 2x2 there and get rid of the 4x4. Chickens don't seem to make the best decisions for themselves, do they? LOL!
