Well, I wondered why my 22-week-old RIRs weren't laying, especially because they've been squatting for nearly two weeks now and singing to me for a few days longer than that. Anyway, today I found over a dozen eggs cached away in a "secret" nest that included the first small eggs from these three girls. I was suspicious when I heard two of them singing like choir boys together near an unchartered spot in the yard. I'm thrilled. I've got 5 of 12 pullets laying now, with 2 more expected to begin in the next few weeks and five more again in a few months. I gave my sister and brother each a dozen eggs today. What fun!

Hi,

I have 4 RIR pullets that started laying in December and are they ever LOUD! They sure do like to sing. But they are great layers and I get four beautiful brown eggs almost every day. Good luck with yours! Genie

My chickens made their own little nests. Feathers made one behind the chicken hutch, Eggie's WAS underneath a grape vine but then she started to lay in Feathers' nest too and they dug up her old nest. Strange.

Mine don't "sing" much, they do sometimes though. mostly when they want to lay they make this "berrrr-berrrrrr-ber-ber-ber-ber-ber-BERRRRR" purring kind of thing.

I wish yours would have a talk with MINE! I've got a Buff O who is a screamer! She did lay a giant egg today but criminy; I have neighbors up by that edge of the property. Good thing they lay during daylight...
