I have one that refuses to lay in the nest box and will only lay ontop of the bag of Sweet PDZ. I gave up weeks ago trying to get her to lay in the nest. I have to keep the bag in the coop so it stays dry so...whatever makes her happy until I get an outside storage area by the coop.

One of my little pullets lays in front of the nest box rather than in it. she prefers the shavings to the straw in the nest I guess.

what a funny girl. My daughters Modern game bantam is not very productive anymore she's about 4 years old. So its really weird that whenever we take her to a show, she decides to lay an egg. One time she layed an egg DURING showmanship while my daughter was showing her! People got it on video! I think she is an egg laying exhibitionist!

When I've gotten really frustrated with their choice of nest location - I've placed a piece of wire netting there.

I'm sure it doesn't make them happy but that was the point. If there is no where else comfortable, they just might choose a nestbox.

Chickens are the funniest creatures! I wonder if these are executive decisions, or they are spontaneous emergency 'calls' on the spot?

Last year, with our first batch of hens, we had the Comets. They are free range but have a very nice coop with very nice nesting boxes not far from the barn.
We found eggs in the nest boxes at first. Then we started finding them throughout the barn. They would lay them in my horses' feed buckets (hanging about 3 feet off the floor) in the stalls. If we forgot to look in the buckets before we put the horses in for the night, the eggs would get smashed by curious horse noses.
These chickens soon learned to climb the big stairway leading to the loft. A lot of nice fresh hay bales to lay on. I would move a bale and find a huge nest of eggs. DH put up a gate across the stairs, but they still occasionally get up there. They LOVE the loft!
The new batch of pullets is just now starting to lay. We'll see what mischief they can get into....
