They look like they are dying

Yes, sleeping babies have that "but I not slee...zzzz" look of kids protesting bedtime. If you think they look dead/dying now, just wait until you see their first dustbath.

Yes, I have heard this. I stoped using the cedar in chicks that were less than 3 weeks old. This is an older pic, one of my first hatches. i have of course since learned on this site not to use cedar.

Fortunately these guys grew up to be beautiful healthy chickens. They are running the property these days.

I do buy my cedar from a company in town that has them in compressed pakages for the horses. It helps keep the stalls a little nicer. Now we use the pine shavings that are brought in the compressed packages. '

Really though, I never had a problem with the cedar with the peeps. In the nursery I use the big flaked pine shavings to discourage the peeps from eating the stuff. This I feel is more of a danger.

I also thought that my chicks were dying. We got them last wed and when I went to check on them after a couple of hours there were down like they were dead. I was terrified. I started going through my head what we may have done to kill them so soon. And then a chick ran past one that was sleeping and woke them up. Our chicks are now a week old. One fell asleep with her beak in the food today. I need to be taking my camera down with me. The are so funny!

Check out the pics in this thread - I saw those and just had to laugh! I too thought mine were all on the brink of death and then I saw swampducks' pic, ha ha! I think it's funny how they basically just *stop* and face-plant on the floor.
