It isn't only the skunks that are out in the day that can be sick, night ones as well. I always thought the same thing and learned the hard way. It was 3:00 am on May 27, 2010 when I was woke up by my sons dog alternately barking, growling, and crying. I ran outside to see what was going on just to see a skunk chasing her around her secured kennel viciously. I ran back to the house for my husband who came out with his shotgun and we had to wait for a clean shot. He shot it in the side. I scooped it up into a bucket lined with several trash cans and took it to the vet to have it tested for rabies. I got a call from the department of health the next Tuesday that it was positive. We opted to euthanize my sons dog because of the risks involved and we would have lost our homeowners insurance.
To get the skunk smell off of you/pets use the below mixture as a dip. Don't wash as it will spread the skunk oil around.
1 quart hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon of dish washing liquid
Mix the above ingredients and pour over affected area. Toss any unused portion.
