It's their natural behavior to run from predators that approach from above, like hawks. Make sure you put your hand in the brooder low and slow next to the chick if you want them to come to you. More than likely you will have to have feed in the hand too. Just be calm, and pick up the running chick from underneath, holding their legs and being careful of their wings. They are not like puppies, it will take a while for them to learn you're the source of food. They might never like to be picked up, but will tolerate it.

I’ve had the best luck with my chicks by having a brooder large enough to sit in so that way I can have treats in my hands and in my lap so they can come to me of their own volition. They can relax and explore while I sit there and observe. After a while they will often perch on my hands or my legs and take naps next to me.

My chicks would do the same thing. As they get older, they will get friendlier. Takes a few weeks though. Having their brooder higher and approaching them from the side instead of from the top helps a lot. You look like a predator swooping down to them from the top. My most skitish one is my friendliest now that she is older.

Yeah, chicks can be like that. You got a lot of good advice here on how to butter them up. My hubby just scoops them up real quick, and once they get warm in his hands or on his belly, they chill right out. He doesn't bother with treats or anything, but I do. I want them to associate me with food because it buys their trust, and I'm the one who does all of the feeding and such.
